Off-Duty Pilot Saves the Day, Lands Plane After Original Pilot Became Incapacitated

Talk about being in the right place at the right time.

A pilot who was only on a flight from Toronto to Newfoundland via Air Canada because he was flying from the country’s eastern province as a next gig, had to step in and land a plane when the original first officer became incapacitated. The pilot was known as a deadhead. That is, he was only being relocated from airport to airport to make his next assignment.

The incident happened on June 7 and only now is coming to light.

Canada's Transportation Safety Board did not elaborate on what happened to the first officer to cause him to become incapacitated.

In a statement, Air Canada said: "A deadheading captain assumed the crew member's duties and landed the aircraft without further incident."

There were no appreciable delays on the flight. FlightAware, an online flight tracking service, showed that the flight went from Toronto to Newfoundland in about three hours. The Transportation Safety Board said the incident was treated as a class five or minor occurrence.

Off-duty pilots and flight attendants often travel as deadheads to get to their next assignment. They travel for free, of course, and in an unofficial capacity. Unless something goes wrong. Just last August, a deadhead pilot stepped in and helped land a Jet2 plane in England.

An off-duty pilot from a different airline stepped in and saved the day after the pilot of a Southwest Airlines flight had a medical emergency mid-flight. The off-duty pilot was travelling as a passenger on the flight from Las Vegas to Columbus, Ohio.

The incident took place shortly after the flight took off from Las Vegas on Wednesday, reported CNN, quoting Southwest Airlines.

"A credentialed Pilot from another airline, who was on board, entered the Flight Deck and assisted with radio communication while our Southwest Pilot flew the aircraft," said airline spokesperson Chris Perry. A nurse who was also on board helped take care of the pilot, said the airline.

Passenger Lands Private Plane on Its Belly After Pilot Suffers Mid-Air 'Medical Condition'

A passenger on a private plane in Massachusetts appears to have saved the day.

Just after 3 p.m. local time on Saturday, the woman, 68, took over the controls of a Piper Meridian Turbo Prop six-seat plane and landed the aircraft at Martha's Vineyard Airport (MVY) "on its belly with no landing gear," according to the West Tisbury Police Department (WTPD).

Authorities say the male pilot "was having a medical condition upon approach," which caused his passenger to step in.

"The female had minor injuries and the male party was extricated from the plane and subsequently med-flighted to Boston for additional treatment," they add. "The Massachusetts State Police and FAA are involved in the investigation."

"The airport has just opened the short runway and slowly continuing operations," the WTPD concluded.
