Thank you Dick.  Is is all very informative.  Can I send it on to our ORD Delta Group?  David W. Skjerven

Hey guys, how are you all doing. Yes, I also got very teary eyed watching that video by Chris Woods.

The question about what aircraft, the P-51 or the Corsair and which is the better aircraft, well I have some time in both aircraft, the 51 is pure SEX where the Corsair is pure mean and ugly in it's own way. Sort of like the F-4. The 51 is powered by a Rolls Royce V1650 cu in engine which produces 1,450 HP and is water cooled, the Corsair is powered by Pratt & Whitney R-2800 cu in engine which produces around 2,000 HP and is air cooled. Some as high as 2,500 HP with water injection. Same basic engine as in the Delta DC-6 & CV-440.

Now come on, when you sit in a 51 you feel like you are part of the airplane. With that long narrow nose and those 12 exhaust stacks barking at you.....SEX. The Corsair is a BIG airplane, big roomy cockpit with a very long round nose. If you look straight down while sitting in the cockpit, your just aft of the trailing edge of the wing. It's very quite in the cockpit as you are so far behind the engine.

One has a pointy nose and the other has a big drag producing nose. That's why the 51 is so fast with so much less horse power. But one bullet in the cooling system brings the 51 down. Both are easy to fly and land. Don't believe all that stuff that you hear, yes demanding but with a lot of T-6 time it's no big deal. Hey, 20 year old's came out of the T-6 and into those airplanes.

If I had the money, ha, I would prefer the 51.

When I purchased my T-6 in 1969, a 51 was going for around $25,000. A corsair for some what less. Now the 51 is +$2,500,000 and the Corsair +$3,000,000. But hey, we had just purchased a brand new 4 bed room home in Buffalo Grove for $33,500 and got a VA loan to do it.

The video by Chris Woods, I believe Jim Brooks the 51 ace was born in 1921 and died in 2020 at age 99. A great ride.

Best,

Dick

P.S. I miss Delta, the flying and the guys I flew with. Now Delta is another thing and what they did to us retired pilots. Morally???
