RE: PHONE SCAMS
As always be aware of many many phone scams perpetrated against us
seniors. Medicare and Social Security
will NOT call you so every one of those calls is automatically suspect. Here below is a scam that Ev Gost wanted to
share with the PCN. Be careful.

Hi Mark-
I want to share information about a recent
telephone scam. I received a telephone call at 6:55AM. When I answered, a voice
said "Grandpa, can you help me? I am in trouble." I asked,
"Nathan, where are you?" He said, "I am in Carson. I had
an accident and need help."
I had difficulty hearing him because I was not
wearing my hearing aids. I asked him to speak louder. He responded, "I
have a broken nose." He continued to tell me that he failed an alcohol
breath test because he had a glass of wine. He said, "I don't want my
parents to find out about this incident. Will you agree not to tell them?"
He said that he had contacted an attorney who was going to help him. He gave me
a case number and the attorney's name and telephone number. He sounded very
distressed when he asked me to call the attorney.
I called the telephone number that he gave me. A
man answered, "Public Defender's office". I asked for David Romo. He
said, "This is David." After I gave him the case number, he told me
that Nathan had an accident and had be charged with DUI. He also said that
Nathan was being blamed for causing the accident, but that the other driver
probably caused it. The woman driving the other car had run through a red light
to hit Nathan's car. She was 6 months pregnant and in the hospital in intensive
care. Nathan had been treated for his broken nose and had been released from
the hospital. He said that a video camera at a gas station near the accident
possibly could provide evidence that the other party caused the accident. He
also said that Nathan did not want his parents to know about the accident.
However, in order for Nathan to be released from police custody, someone would
need to be responsible for ensuring that Nathan would return for his court
hearing.
At that point, I told him that I would drive to
Carson to resolve the problem. He said that my presence was not necessary. I
responded that if my grandson had a broken nose and was in distress, I was
coming there to meet with him. He gave me an address and a room number.
After ending that call, I decided to call my
grandson's cell phone. I woke him up! He was safely asleep at home. The 6:55 AM
call was a bogus set up in an attempt to extract bond money from me. I wondered
how they knew that I had a grandson named Nathan. Then, I remembered that I
responded, "Nathan, where are you" when I received the
call.
I placed another call to the
"attorney" and told him that he had the wrong grandfather. I followed
up with a complaint to the FTC and my local sheriff's department. The sheriff's
office said that they would call the "attorney". That telephone
number has been disconnected.
BEWARE--CREATIVE SCAMMERS STILL ARE PURSUING
PREY !!!
