Interview
with Vietnam Airlines A321 Captain Jesus Ponce
|
|
This month we
spoke to Captain Jesus Ponce, an A321 Captain celebrating 10 years with
Vietnam Airlines and CAE Parc Aviation! Here's what he had to say
about living and working in Vietnam.
What do you like
about working with Vietnam Airlines?
Vietnam Airlines offer a commuting contract that suits my
needs. Since I’m from the Philippines, just 2 hours away, I can
easily visit my family on my days off every month.
Friendly co-workers here in VNA, good food and rich culture have kept
me here this long. 10 years away from my family would not be possible if I
didn't have my extended family here. I'm treated as a family member.
So the secret in staying long in any foreign country is to have a good
support group and a friendly neighbourhood. We work on our assigned
schedule and enjoy visiting the countryside during our days off.
What do you
think about the career opportunities (LTC/TRI/TRE and wide body aircraft)
in Vietnam Airlines?
Upgrading to other equipment or to an LTC/TRI/TRE position is purely based
on performance and seniority, and one should be able to pass the screening
process. Everybody is given a fair chance for an upgrade.
What made you
stay with CAE Parc and Vietnam Airlines for 10 years?
I've been here for 10 years now because VNA complied with everything
that was stipulated in the agreement with them through CAE Parc. There is
no perfect Airline - as I always reiterate with our new pilots here. To
stay long and happy in any job is always a direct result of how we treat
our colleagues no matter who and what their position is in the company.
Respect is the key.
How did you
feel when the crew made a surprise of celebrating your 10 year anniversary
after your flight?
I was very grateful to CAE Parc prior to that flight when
they let me sign an agreement for another 5 years. We don’t have any formal
recognition here for working 5, 10, 15 years or more since we are all
contractual employees. But to my surprise, my crew from my flight from
Incheon back to Vietnam prepared a surprise during our flight. It was
unexpected, and I was so grateful to them that they recognized my 10 year
service with VNA.
How do you find
living in Vietnam now? Thoughts on food, culture, people and lifestyle?
Does your family like Vietnam? What is your favourite place to travel to in
Vietnam?
In my 10 years here now, I have seen growth not only in terms of
infrastructure but in tourist travel, too. Almost all our airports
were upgraded with a much bigger terminal to accommodate the increase in
tourist arrivals. Runway facilities were upgraded and some new
parallel runways were also constructed.
My family loves the food and the closeness of Vietnamese families, their
family ties have impressed us most. My family made a lot of Vietnamese
friends and they too have visited my hometown in the Philippines. We
have a lot of places to travel still left on our bucket list, but a visit
to Dalat City, the flower capital of Vietnam, is a must for the new
comers.
What is your
advice to people applying to Vietnam Airlines through CAE Parc
Aviation?
My advice to all my friends who wish to apply to VNA through CAE
Parc is to finish all the necessary requirements needed and let the
team do the rest. Be prepared for the screening and if you need
anything in Vietnam, don’t be afraid to ask our CAE
Parc representatives in HCMC for any assistance. Be friendly to
everyone and by doing so, you will soon discover how friendly and helpful
the Vietnamese are in spite of the language barrier.
