Dear PCN (of over 2600 subscribers),
Happy 4th
of July Holiday Break!
239
years since the Dec of Independence!
Rash of Deaths and
Notices from PCN:
I often times get one liners like this one from Capt
Steve: “Crap, lots of guys your
age kicking the bucket... Time to buy a new fishing boat....” captsteve06@yahoo.com
Believe it or not I can relate. It is heavy and disconcerting to see so many
notices about our fellow aviators who
have died. Since we are all aging it
becomes a little close to home. Like I
said……I can relate. However, many times
I see a notice about someone I worked with, cared about or can relate to and
then I pause, reflect and many times send comments or thoughts to the surviving
family. Bottom line, PCN Death Notices
can come in a rash and can be heavy, but many many (as I do) appreciate the
service and hats off to our manager Carol Faulkner for all the hard work in
managing “Flight West” and our notices.
Thank you!
We also had an
email questioning the PCN’s publishing of a compiled list of deceased pilots
edited by David Roberts. The email was
concerned about security issues. Allow me to re-state our policy about the
publishing of notices and lists.
Regarding the lists, they are published on a semi-private PCN web site
and are difficult to ever find unless you are a subscriber to the PCN. Further,
the list contain no employee or social security numbers and publish no more
sensitive information about the deceased than is readily accessible online by
virtually anyone. Regarding notices they
are distributed to our closed and scrutinized group only and when archived on
our “Flight West” page, only information that is readily available online of
published obits and news releases is included.
Odd Calm!
Take a look at the Boeing 767 HSI in the upper left
hand corner. Notice anything unusual?
TAS (True Airspeed) = 462 and GS (Ground Speed) = 462. They are they same meaning notta, zippo absolutely Zero winds aloft. Sometimes this happens when the winds are a direct cross but this time it happened at Flight Level 38,000' over the Pacific with absolutely no wind at all. We've all seen many times winds at this altitude of over 200 mph, but unless we have flown the equator only 1 in 10,000 times a situation like this occurs in the mid latitudes. Odd!
