Prying Eyes!
Well, I have been proudly a bit anal and mostly successful
in keeping internet spammers out of membership to our group. That has been accomplished, for the most
part, by the join process in asking members to give me some personal
information so that I simply do not allow “complete strangers in”. Now, I’m a bit surprised to learn (beyond any
question), that some members from within the active company (I would not have
allowed to join), have done so under a crypted email and an alias. I have always known that our PCN is an
important tool representing our retired pilot group and in addition have always
known that there are those from within the group that would share selected
information with our former company’s management. Now, in the process of “inviting” our membership
to the new Forum, I learn that some in rather high places have had ongoing direct
access to our newsletter. Without
sharing the specific details, this revelation will help me and us keep eyes
wide open moving forward.
It could be that high office holders simply respect our
group and wish to keep up with our exploits.
Or there may be other more “business” reasons to keep posted with our
group’s activities. Whatever the case,
it is virtually impossible for me to privatize our newsletter………… prying eyes
are out there. Word up!
PCN Forum!
What’s all the
Hub-bub!
Guys and gals, the Forum was created for you. It is hoped that those who wish to
communicated peer to peer (so to speak) will be able to do so within this newly
formed group. I personally will not be a
full time contributor in favor of compiling the High Life. How is the
membership going? Well, as of now, 12% of the regular PCN subscribers are now
members inside the Forum. Remember, when
you come across something of interest of
helpful, feel free to post a new topic in the forum directly to all within.
Note: While there are global settings within the Forum,
Google has created a lot of ways for members to “personalize “ their
settings. Play around and set it up the
way you like it, and if there is a “global” setting that you wish to see
changed, then email me and maybe we can get that done.
Basics of Forum operation Video:
HNL
Departure Full of Fun & Games
The pre-flight was going swimmingly
with our tasks way ahead and on deck and in fine shape for an early
departure. HNL was using 26R for takeoffs. Once ground
handling was wrapping up, we called for a clearance and got cleared the Molakia
4 departure and then all the fun for our flight began. She gave us a
heading after departure of a right turn to 140 and then skipped giving us a
transponder squawk. So I read everything I got back with one little
correction……. I let her know that the right turn to 140 was a bit difficult going
to work off the departure end of 26R. After a pause, a revised clearance
was issued to us as per normal which included a left turn to
heading of 200 and then queried me that I didn't read back the
squawk. Well, there was no read-back because we never received a
squawk in the first place. Now, all corrected, the fun was really
just getting started.
Ground control cleared us to push
off gate 20 with tail west onto Alpha. There is where we sat as we
started engines and ran the follow up checklists. Shortly a B777 JAL was cleared to cross 26R on
taxiway Z perpendicular to us and he crossed at break neck speed as they headed
to their gate. So what's the problem? THERE WAS A BIG
PROBLEM! JAL's wingtip was not going to
clear our craft. It seems like someone was in a hurry to get to the
beach, but for me sitting on the right side now threatened by a 777 wingtip my
eyes were growing. The Captain, Matt Inman picked up the mic on ground control
frequency and ordered JAL to stop. Thank God JAL had switched to
ground control because the JAL FO onboard heard our plea and did indeed stop a
few yards before there was this metal on metal loud crunching sound.
Well, that put us a full alert and now
that the blood pressure was certainly up as we requested our taxi clearance to
get out of JAL’s way and happily received it. Ground cleared us taxiway A,K,A
hold short of runway 22R. We did as instructed except and even
though, technically we never used taxiway Kilo. It wasn’t on our
route. Ok, no problem, we'll give the
ground controller that one. The tower controller then clears us
across both runway 22's to hold short of our takeoff runway of 26R on taxiway C. Next,
we hear our clearance to “line up and wait on runway 26R” so we began to take
the runway. Almost simultaneously, we also hear Tower
clear a regional to land on the runway that we now occupied. That
of course creates that sinking feeling.
I had the brief thought, that I hope he can see our bright red
tail. The co-pilot of the landing
aircraft came back confused and queried the Tower about the runway they were
cleared to land on and stated "we are cleared to land on 22L,
correct?" This time with a little nudge from the regional crew and
to our great relief the Tower finally got it right and cleared them to land on
a runway next to us that coincidently we did not
occupy. By this time we both were thinking that something strange was
in the air. Finally, we hear the words flight 109 you are cleared
for takeoff on R26R. Without hesitation throttles advance and we
breathe a sigh of relief and as our wheels break ground our flight finally turns
more normal.
You know, the islands have their own
time, their own ways, and sometimes that carries over to ATC with their own
clearances. Ya'll be careful, ya hear!
