“Boeing AGREEMENT…….What Agreement?”
Delta to Buy Only Boeing Jets for 20 Years

Delta Air Lines said yesterday that it would buy only Boeing jets for the
next 20 years, and announced an initial order for 106 aircraft worth $6.7
billion. It also announced options to buy an additional 124 jets worth $8.3
billion.Published: March 21, 1997
The agreement signaled that monogamy was on the rise in the airline industry, and executives at Airbus Industrie, the European jet manufacturer, said they were not happy about it.
The Delta agreement, after all, paralleled one signed last November by American Airlines, which also committed to a long-term relationship with Boeing for about 20 years. Both airlines said that in return for promising steady business to Boeing, they get price breaks and flexibility in the timing of deliveries of new planes. In addition, they said, a fleet of planes from just one manufacturer lowered the costs of training and keeping spare parts inventories.
''We believe this is the most competitive fleet plan in the industry,'' Ronald W. Allen, the chairman of Delta, said. He added that the order would give Delta ''the right aircraft at the right time and at the right price.''
