As you probably know, DDPSA continues to shift its focus
towards survivor benefits. This is a natural transition because there are far
more potential survivors than disabled pilots. Four of the members of DDPSA's
current Board of Directors are either survivors or normally retired pilots.
Mike Lloyd, who recently joined our Board, brings a lot of energy and
experience to help us achieve our goal of protecting D&S Plan benefits and
the D&S Trust.

Why I Support DDPSA
It’s
personal -- I love my wife. While she soloed through countless anniversaries,
birthdays, holidays, blizzards and family illnesses, I flew to fascinating
places, stayed in nice hotels, ate in nice restaurants. For thirty-two years,
she supported me, and our children, and we looked forward to retirement. Delta’s
bankruptcy and the pension loss affected us both.
Just
as I never dreamed my pension would disappear, I never worried about my wife’s
survivor benefit. But the risk to her is real as well.
Nearly 5000 retired pilots with spouses are eligible for
this benefit through the Disability and Survivorship Trust. A small group of retired Delta pilots and surviving
spouses are now working to ensure the benefit endures.
Organized
as the Delta Disabled Pilot and Survivors Association (DDPSA), it works
with Delta Air Lines and ALPA to maintain adequate funding for the D&S
Trust. It also supports surviving spouses to ensure they receive their benefit
in a timely and accurate manner.
My
experience as chairman of Delta Pilots Mutual Aid (DPMA) taught me how
challenging bureaucracy can be for a surviving spouse in attaining benefits. As
retirees, we are no longer represented by ALPA, but it’s heartening to know
DDPSA is there to assist my wife, or yours, when we no longer can.
