Historic L-1011 fuselage installed as museum renovations continue

February 21, 2014
The original fuselage section of the first L-1011 Tri-Star built by Lockheed has been positioned in Historic Hangar 2 as renovations continue for this summer’s opening of the new Delta Flight Museum.
Built in 1970, the cabin section that most recently housed the museum store in Hangar 1 before renovations began, will be used for classroom and conference space in the new museum. The fuselage has been installed on the mezzanine level in Hangar 2 overlooking the Boeing 767 “Spirit of Delta” that was purchased by employees for the company in 1982.
The original widebody L-1011 was used only for test flights and has never been flown by an airline. Delta flew other Tri-Star aircraft between 1973 and 2001.
The fuselage, painted in the classic Delta livery, has an interesting history of its own. When Lockheed discontinued using the plane for test flights, a Delta maintenance team salvaged a 65-foot section of the fuselage from the cockpit to the wing. It was converted to a mock-up aircraft that was used as a set for photo shoots, commercials and in-flight safety videos.
During the early 1990s, when Delta was the official airline of Walt Disney World, the set was housed at the MGM-Disney Studios in Orlando, Fla., where it was used to shoot feature films including “Passenger 57,” starring Wesley Snipes, and “Quick Change,” starring Bill Murray.
The fuselage returned to Atlanta in 1999 where it was again repurposed to serve as the Delta Museum Store in 2002 until renovations began last year.
As part of the renovation, the museum continues to offer a commemorative brick campaign as a fundraising effort for the improved facility. The pavers will ornament the planned courtyard immediately in front of the museum entrance in front the hangars.
A variety of red clay brick sizes are for sale starting at $120 each. Funds generated by the brick sale will support exhibits and other features that will chronicle Delta’s history from its origins as a crop-dusting venture in the Louisiana bayou to today’s global network and into the future of commercial aviation.
Employees and can learn more about the program from a link on the museum’s website.
