Mark and Dick-
As you may or may not know, I assumed the position of Chairman of the Delta Disabled Pilots and Survivors Association (DDPSA) as of July 1st. DDPSA's focus is on the Delta Pilots Disability and Survivorship (D&S) Plan including the benefits of survivors of normally (and early) retired pilots as well as disabled pilots and their survivors. The attached press release announces the appointment of a non-disabled pilot to the office of Secretary of the organization.

DDPSA NEWS RELEASE—August
8, 2013
DDPSA Chairman, Ev Gost, has announced the appointment of retired
Delta Captain Jim George to the position of Secretary of DDPSA. Jim graduated
from the U S Air Force Academy in 1967 and completed a successful 20 year
career in the Air Force where he flew over 200 missions in Southeast Asia and
subsequently commanded an F-16 squadron. He was hired by Delta in 1987 and
retired as a 757/767 Captain in 2004. While at Delta, he served on the Board of
Trustees of Delta Pilots Mutual Aid (DPMA) and as the ALPA Council 16 (LAX)
Retirement and Insurance Committee Chairman.
Jim’s depth of knowledge of the D&S Plan will make him a
valuable asset to DDPSA. His work as a
financial advisor to many retired
pilots, disabled pilots and survivors of deceased pilots has made him well
aware of the importance of maintaining the integrity of current D&S Plan
benefits.
The
appointment of a non-disabled retired pilot to the position of Secretary is
evidence of the ongoing transition of DDPSA’s focus towards survivor benefits.
There are two groups that have grandfathered benefits under the D&S Plan:
eligible surviving spouses of pilots who retired from Delta prior to January 1,
2008 and disabled Delta pilots who retired or were removed from the seniority
list on or before June 1, 2006. The number of surviving spouses receiving
benefits from the D&S Plan now outnumbers the older generation of disabled
pilots. Therefore, it is appropriate for
non-disabled retired pilots to take a greater role in DDPSA. Three survivors,
Joan Greene, Jo Ann Durham and Ann Blaz, currently serve on the DDPSA Board of
Directors. The DDPSA website is www.ddpsa.org.
