Retiree Life Insurance
Mark
Upon realizing that the last time I checked some of my Delta
Life Insurance beneficiary assignments was in 2007, I wondered if a few of my
fellow retirees were also negligent in this area. A surprise was that the
companies insuring us have changed. MetLife now provides Basic Life, Optional
Life and Spouse Life insurance. You can choose beneficiaries for Base and
Optional, but you are the beneficiary of Spouse Life.
The web site for MetLife is www.metlife.com/mybenefits and
they remembered the userID/pw from 4 years ago. If you need the Group Policy
number, try 50003. Their phone number for Delta retirees is 866-939-7409. Once
you enter and save your beneficiaries, you must print and sign the page, and
mail it to them.
Prudential covers Group Accident Life and Private Pilot Life
insurance. You can choose beneficiaries for Group Accident and Private Pilot,
but you must assign the same beneficiaries and the same percentages for both.
The web site for Prudential is www.prudential.com/mybenefits
and this is the worst web site I have visited in years. They carried over
beneficiary names from the previous insurer, but not info, so you should click
on each name and enter addresses, etc. The listed beneficiaries apply to both
policies. You do not have to mail anything to them, and they email a copy of
your beneficiary assignments to you. Their phone for Delta retirees is
877-232-3561.
If you want current copies of policies and coverage, you have
to contact 800-MYDELTA, and they will mail or email copies to you. OK, now I'm
good for another five years!

Subject: ALPA
helps DDPSA obtain another favorable outcome
Hi Mark-

ALPA
helps DDPSA obtain another favorable outcome
The Delta Disabled Pilots and Survivors Association
(DDPSA) primary function is to protect both disability and survivorship
benefits under the Delta Pilots Disability and Survivorship (D&S) Plan. In
2011, DDPSA Board Members Ev Gost, Jim Haigh and Joan Greene met with ALPA
representatives in Atlanta to discuss a number of concerns about the D&S
Plan. Two major items on our agenda were:
1. The $60 million annual expenditure from the D&S
Plan to pay for pilot sick leave and vacation pay.
2. The D&S Plan restriction upon marriage that was
applicable to survivors
of pilots who deceased before September 1, 2001 and before retiring from Delta.
According to that restriction, survivor's benefits were terminated if the
survivor married.
In negotiating the new Pilot Working Agreement, ALPA
successfully eliminated the $60 million annual expenditure from the D&S
Trust for pilot sick leave and vacation pay effective January 1, 2013.
Additionally, ALPA recently received written confirmation that survivors, who
previously were restricted from marriage, will not lose eligibility for D&S
Plan survivor's benefits if the marriage occurs after July 1, 2012. Delta will
be sending notices to the survivors impacted by this change.
DDPSA is very pleased that ALPA, and specifically MEC
Retirement & Insurance Committee Chairman Kevin Powell, were instrumental
in negotiating these two favorable changes to the D&S Plan. The elimination
of the $60 million expenditure for pilot sick leave and vacation pay will
reduce annual expenditures from the D&S Trust and the elimination of the
"marriage penalty" will benefit a number of impacted survivors.
In conveying this information, we emphasize the following:
1. The D&S Plan will not be amended to reinstate benefits of survivors who became ineligible for benefits as a result of marriage before July 1, 2012.
2. The removal of the "marriage penalty" will be effective only for marriages that occur on or after July 1, 2012.
3. It would be prudent for survivors impacted by this change to the D&S Plan to await Delta's communication of this information before planning a wedding. Alternatively, at least get written confirmation from Delta that marriage on or after July 1, 2012 will not disturb D&S Plan survivor's benefits.
