Non Rev experience perfect storm.
I
have had some wonderful experiences non-revving. I have also had some bummers. Barb and I were
looking for a brief little adventure so we chose to visit LAS before it got
hot. So nonrev nonstop from CVG was
fine. Coming back on a Sat was a totally
different affair. The singular non-stop
was a redeye and it was oversold. So now
it means we have to go through a hub, and ATL was our best of some pretty bad options.
By
the time we made ATL we were hearing about FL WX canceling a lot of
flights. We were also seeing that crews
were not available to fly various airline schedules and on top of all that it
was the end of many Spring breakers get-a-way with their efforts to fly back
home. A perfect storm of sorts. We got into ATL shortly after noon. Every flight to CVG and to any of over 10
possible intermediate options was a no go.
Then comes Sunday. The same. Now I am not a novice non-revver. I have been doing it awhile and usually can
find an avenue to work. But not this
time. Every city out of ATL on every
flight for Sat aftn, all day Sun and Mon were impossible.
Solution,
rent a one-way vehicle from a car agency and drive. Problem:
Every other stranded overnighting bumped passenger attempted to do the
same thing. No cars available. WHAT?
NO CARS? After a lot of looking
and trying to book (note; mostly online since many agencies have done away with
human reservations) I finally got a reservation to take with Hertz. While I wasn’t very sure of its validity, we
showed up on Mon morn and there were 2 cars on the lot in the entire Hertz
parking garage. We were given one of
the. Don’t stop to question or delay,
just hop in and drive. Yes, 8 hrs later
we were back in lovely Florence, KY. A
non-rev must be flexible, but I swear, if I have to stay this flexible that
benefit may just sit on the shelf.
If
you haven’t tried this activity for awhile, there certainly has been some
changes. And a big one is the way
categories of Standby passenger have evolved and exponentially grown. See the following sections for more on
this. In the meantime, Barb and I will
not stop traveling but the F150 is looking more and more like my faithful
steed.

Non-Rev Question
Hi Mark, I have a Non Rev
question.
After several years my wife and I non reved
for the first time this past weekend. I used one of the "6"
days of "S3A" passes that we get. I guess I misunderstood what
an "S3A" pass was. In other words, when I looked at the
nonrev list we, with a new hire date of 1978, where ahead of 3 other retired
with new hire dates in the late 80's and behind 3 current employees with new
hire dates in the 2010"s.
So, I "checked in" using "S3A"....The
"airport active list" still showed us behind the active employees
with new hire dates of 2010 and still ahead of the retired late 1980's.
My retired friends at United say they can non
rev and the boarding list is according to new hire date no matter your status.
So, my question is just what kind of
"priority" does a "S3A" give us? If you are a senior
retiree, is it a mote point?
Thank you very much "Mother" Delta.
Sincerely, David W. Skjerven
Editor: David, I’m out in
Vegas right now and will hopefully be non-revving tonight back home.(see above
perfect storm…..didn’t make it) I've your question and will address
in depth in next High Life but for now I'm listed on flt with regular S3B. But
I attached a airport stby list so you can see that active employees are
S3. That makes them one priority above S3A. Which is
why I didn't waste our higher priority of S3A, since it wouldn't have helped
us. As retirees, the S3A helps buy really only mostly over other
retirees who don't have am older seniority and used their higher
priority.
Now allow me to publish the description of the ever
growing and evolving categories of standby flyers. If you haven’t non-revved
for a while you need to not only understand how all the many categories of
employee/retiree impact you, but also the HK’s this group of non-revs often
ruin your whole travel plans. Here is a
quick explanation of HK’s that should help:
