Dear PCN (of over 2600 subscribers),

Captain Upgrade – Do you remember how you first learned you had the bid?  Do you remember charm school?  How about the training and your oral exam or the sim?  What about the IOE?   Ahhhhhh,  the memories!!!

My Delta Captain experience happened when I had 12 years of service on July 5th 1990 as I returned to the venerable B727. I was at a very popular Chief Pilot Roger Scott’s farewell party when another very popular Chief Pilot from ORD, Dick Schutack, told me about the award.  While I was very sad to see Roger go, I was smiling about the future prospects the rest of the night.   Boy, was that a kick.  Later, my best friend came by just to say congratulations when he heard I had the bid and said, “you’ll go to work from now on with a smile on your face.”  And you know what?  He was right.  Flying on a mainline and not just any old mainline but flying for Delta, as a captain, is as good as it gets.  Now, as I am a year and a half retired, I am reliving all those feelings as my oldest son just won his bid for his captain leaving his FO seat on the A350 and returning to the A320 in DTW.  I know just what happens to one’s enthusiasm as a senior FO and the only cure is a seat swap.  Well, now it is Mike’s turn and I can’t wait to relive with him his life changing experience.

One of my last FO trips with Capt George Elbel before captain training, 1990.

Carol out of town ‘til 30thIf you have sent a notice directly to Carol, over the last few days, she has been out of town and will return soon.  Just a reminder, for death notice sharing please use our -death.flwnwst@gmail.com email address as it can be monitored by Carol and myself.

NFL Draft – I can understand fan interest in their favorite teams picks and I can also understand the overall interest in the NFL.  But I cannot get the draft show.  It is the most boring waiting around for supposedly blockbuster announcements that always seem like an anticlimax.  I just don’t get it.
