Misc - HL 294 (4)

I thank Capt Jon for sharing his cardiac experience.

Subject: My cardiac experience

This is about my coronary calcium scan this month and subsequent procedures.  I am sharing this with my family and close friends to alleviate their concerns and to encourage others to consider the free coronary artery scan offered at Virtual Imaging in Atlanta.       http://www.virtualimagingatl.com/

A good friend from high school did this some time ago and encouraged me to do the same.   I expected a perfect (zero) score, because:
1.  I have strictly adhered to the aerobics program for 45 years, doing four serious bike rides per week for the last two decades.
2.  I have no symptoms, carefully watch my diet, and I weigh less than I did in Navy flight training.
3.  Although my cholesterol has always been high, my (protective) HDL has been around 80 (recommended number is above 40).  I have never taken a statin drug.

A calcium score is a marker for plaque buildup.  A number above 400 is of great concern.  Mine was 499, with 450 of it being at the Left Anterior Descending Artery (LAD), "the widow maker".

I promptly received a three-page report and encouragement to see a cardiologist right away.  I was quite concerned.
The short version of the rest of the story is that a nuclear stress test showed good blood flow in my coronary arteries and heart.  An ultrasound (echo cardiogram) was normal.  I have been advised to begin taking a statin drug, and to get my LDL (called the "bad cholesterol") down, in order to get atherosclerosis stabilized and prevent its progression.

I asked my cardiologist about Dr. David Perlmutter's assertion in his book Grain Brain that cholesterol is brain food and that statins are over-prescribed.  His answer was that we were born with an LDL of 60 at the time when our brains were going through the most rapid development.  Therefore, that level is all we need to nurture our brains.  His goal for his patients' LDL is below 70.

I feel very fortunate that my arterial plaque was discovered before it developed serious blockage.  Without the scan at Virtual Imaging, I would be unaware.

To your health,

Jon

Upon cleaning out our storage unit, we came upon a box containing six Northeast Airlines unused boxed playing cards and 32 on board First Class Yellowbird coffee cups along with a plastic tube full of Yellowbird pins and a NEA travel bag. If any of your members would be interested, I will ship the box from Safety Harbor, FL at their expense.
Thanks,
David A. Beaulieu

Subject: DELTA'S OLDEST LIVING PILOTS - JULY 2018

Hello all,

Each year I compile a list of Delta's Oldest Living Pilots, which includes all living pilots from ANY airline that is now shown on Delta's Family Tree schematic (attached below).

This is the second list for 2018 and is attached below in both MS Excel and.pdf formats and is current as of TODAY, July 11, 2018. This is a list created from various data base lists that provide each pilot's date of birth.  The age of each person increases by one year on their day of birth using a spreadsheet formula so the list is correct today only.  There are two lists below in two formats each;  one is sorted by age and the second A.Z is sorted alphabetically.  Each list is in MS Excel format and in .pdf format, whichever is better for you to use.

Due to privacy concerns I WILL NOT publish the pilot's Date of Birth, only the month of birth and the pilot's age - as of the particular date of this report  - which is stated on the report.  But to compile this report I need each pilot's exact Date of Birth in the data base.

If you know spouse names for those shown with question marks, please click Reply and send me that information.  Those that passed away during the year so far are highlighted in Yellow with their date of death if known.

There is an E in the Email column for those for whom I have an email address.  If you have an email address for any of the other pilots, please send it to me so I can send them this list.

I arbitrarily determined several years ago that a good age for inclusion on this list was the calendar year the pilot reached the age of 86 and the 2018 list is now as complete as I can make it.   For the year 2018 any living pilot from any of the companies now on Delta's Family Tree with a date of birth of 1932 or earlier should be included.  The list is a work-in-progress so help me make it grow, in size and accuracy.

If you know of a pilot whose name is missing and should be included, please send me that pilot's FULL name, Spouse's name, the pilot's Date of Birth and Date of Hire and the pilot's ORIGINAL airline company.  If the spouse is deceased, please include that information with the spouse's name.

Lets celebrate our most senior pilots again and again.  Send them a Birthday card or an email at the beginning of their month of birth.

Thank you for your help.

Blessings, all.
