Subject: Merry Christmas

Hurricane Nate came ashore in the Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday, October 7, 2017.
The preceding Friday night, we took my wife, Joan,  to the ER, and the surgery for a perforated colon took place after midnight on Saturday morning.  She was in the hospital for 17 days, including 4 days in the ICU, and then, in a hospital bed at home.

The surgeon turned her loose Wednesday afternoon, and we hadn’t been out to eat for almost 3 months. It was mid afternoon, but we stopped at my favorite seafood joint, and I had 3 dozen on the half shell. I would have had more, but they cost $5 a dozen.

The hospital bed went back yesterday. The photo is of our 54th anniversary dinner last night. I have been the chief cook, bottle washer, and nurse, for almost 3 months . Incidentally, I think the microwave oven is the world’s greatest invention.

Her timing is excellent, because she is going to have to take care of me again. I am still cancer free. My last brain surgery was 4 years ago, and my right hand was slightly crippled. It has steadily worsened, to the point of being basically useless, and I am going to have it operated on next month, and the recovery time is about 8 weeks. It’s going to be strange to have non cancer surgery.

Wednesday afternoon, Joan was opening saltine packages for me with the oysters, because I couldn’t do it myself. I was in the midst of a “pity party,” when a couple came in, and sat at the table beside us. I apologized to God for not being grateful.....The man had a stub at his elbow, and had no right hand.

We wish you a very Merry Christmas, and a great New Year!
