Medicare Card Changes Coming Soon
|
By April of
2019, all Medicare cards will be replaced, and they will no longer list
your Social Security number as your identifier. This change will help
protect your medical and financial information. It will also be a time to
be very diligent and watch out for scammers.
Below is some
helpful information regarding this change:
- New
Medicare cards will be mailed out beginning April 2018. This
transition is expected to take until May 2019.
- Your
Medicare benefits WILL
NOT CHANGE.
- You
will be able to begin using the new Medicare card as soon as it is
received.
- The
new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) format will be clearly
different than the current Health Insurance Claim Numbers (HICN).
- Spouses
will have separate MBI numbers.
For more
information, visit cms.gov or, if you do not
have access to a computer, call 1-800-633-4227.

Stay
informed and watch for red flags!
Medicare will NEVER call
you to verify medical information, personal information or charge you a
fee for the card. They will also
NEVER threaten to cancel or change your benefits.
If this happens
to you, it is a scam and you should report it to the Better Business
Bureau Scam Tracker at www.bbb.org/scamtracker/us.
Scammers may think
this transition time will be a golden opportunity to try and steal your
identity. Stay current and learn more about scams and identity theft at www.bbb.org.
