The Fourth Annual
Delta Golden Wings Fly-in/Drive-in was held on May 17, 2017 at Alexander
Memorial Airport, Williamson, Georgia. The airport was renamed in honor of Ron
Alexander who passed away in a tragic accident while flying his replica Curtis
Jenny in November last year. Ron’s memory is perpetuated by our commitment to
hold the event annually, as he envisioned.
Members of the
organizing committee were Jim Hoogerwerf, Julian Black, Bob Lindley, Harry
Ballance, Jack Baker, Leo Roberson, Jim Ratliff, and Amy King. A special note
of appreciation is to acknowledge the contributions of all volunteers,
especially the help of Youth Program members who assisted Jack Baker with the
cars and staffed the food line. John Ellis, Pike County Journal Reporter
photographer, attended and generously shared his pictures.
It was a beautiful
day—blue sky, light winds, and seasonally warm. Seventy-four retirees from
Delta Golden Wings, Clipped Wings, Pioneers, dispatchers, and guests (see list
of names below) were in attendance and brought eight aircraft and ten
automobiles to the event. As guests arrived, automobile drivers were directed
to parking by Jack Baker. Those wishing to display their cars were parked in
front of the hangar. John Kuck directed pilots to park their planes in front of
the restaurant. Car and airplane information cards were completed at
registration. Owners placed them on their cars while Julian Black and Bob Lindley attached them to the aircraft
propellers with a rubber band.
Most
people began arriving about 11am. A Stearman formation dramatically kicked off
the event with a fly-by flown by Jim Ratliff, Vic Syracuse and John Laughter.
They made several passes ending with the missing man salute at the end.
Jim
Sells was another aerial participant with passes in the Candler Field Express
DC-3.
As guests entered
the Candler Field museum lobby or hangar, they were directed to the
registration table and welcomed by Kathy Baker, Joan Black, and Amy King.
Everyone received a name tag, filled out a simple form, and was asked to donate
five dollars to the Candler Field Youth Program. Tables and chairs were
arranged in the hangar and a beverage refreshment bar available. A food line
was operated by the Youth Program. A hamburger/hot dog, chips, and drink could
be purchased for $8.00. The money raised was to finance five youth members’
trip to Oshkosh this summer. The Barnstormer’s Grill was also available for
menu service.
A short program
honored Ron Alexander’s memory. Keven Sasser, interim director of the museum,
outlined plans for the future and Connie Bowlin spoke on the scholarship
program.
A total of $602
was donated at the registration desk and $554 raised at the food line. All the
proceeds went directly to the Youth Program. Event expenses were covered by the
generosity of the organizing committee members. Use of the Museum facilities
were generously provided by the Candler Field Museum. DGW shows it’s
appreciation by maintaining an institutional membership in the Candler Field
Museum. You are encouraged to show your individual support by joining the
museum.
We look forward to
seeing everyone next year for the fifth annual Fly-in/Drive-in!
