Human Interest - HL 275 (1)

Subject: Visit with retired Ms. Doris Davidson

Hello all,
Recently retired Captain Jim Hoogerwerf visited with Doris at her
home in Alpine, Alabama and told me about it.  I asked him to send me
his notes so I could pass them along,  Many of you remember Doris for
her many years in Crew Scheduling based in ATL.  I recall the cover
of one Delta Digest that depicted Doris and her many Delta Service
pins.  At that time she had more years with Delta than anyone else
and had received eleven (11) service pins.
Doris is one of two honorary members of Delta Golden Wings still
living, along with Mrs. Carol Ann Faulkner.
She would love to have visitors or notes or emails.

 Dave,
I met with Doris twice at her home, June 2 and 9. I recorded about 5
hours of conversation. I think its a good idea to include some of her
story with your email.
Doris was born in June 1927 and just celebrated her 90th birthday.
She grew up as a sharecroppers daughter in rural Campbell county,
which was merged into Fulton County, Georgia, in 1932. The family was
poor, but she says "we were never hungry" and "had enough to wear."
She had one sister twelve years her junior. Her parents placed great
value on education and made adjustments from chores for her to attend
school. She was the valedictorian in high school. Her father died
when she was 17. She attended business school and worked for the
government for about a year, then she hired on with Delta in 1946.
She became a crew scheduler when we had about 220 pilots. When she
retired after 56 years of service, she says we had over 10,000!

She says her mother was her best friend; she is estranged from her
sister. I didn't ask if she ever married. She lives now in rural
Alabama in a very nice home adjacent to her niece's. She doesn't
drive anymore so I took her out for lunch. We went to a place for
BBQ, 'The Shack' I highly recommend it!

I really enjoyed visiting with Doris and talking about her years at
Delta. She would like visitors. It was about 3 hrs drive R/T for me
(from Auburn, AL), but well worth it. She remembers a lot; I asked if
she remembered me...she said "no." I always tried to keep a low
profile, so I guess I succeeded!
I spoke with Doris just now and she would love to hear from people or
have them visit. She said, "just drop in, no need to call." But it
would probable be a good idea to call first.
