Say Pete, you should look into this.  Sounds like the kind of trip you want to go on so that you can see if your bomb craters are still there.  David

Vietnam trip April 10-27, 2016 Part II

To read the story in sequence,  Part I, filed earlier, is copied below.

Dear Friends,

(April 20) I last wrote early in the morning from Hue (part I). We had another busy day ahead of us. First off Loi, our tour guide, took us to the Citadel, scene of intense fighting during TET '68. The Marines were forced to shift from jungle tactics to urban warfare in the ensuing battle. It was a tough slog with street to street and house to house combat. The Marines were ultimately victorious in defeating a determined enemy in the bloody month long battle. Today, as we found at other sites, almost all traces of the fighting have disappeared. The historic Citadel is now a Unesco World Heritage Site undergoing restoration. It is a huge complex; it even included a small airfield within its walls at one time.

After lunch we left Hue and drove south on National Route 1A to Danang.  Traffic was heavy as we started out but lightened up outside the city. The Phu Bai airport (known as Hue Phu Bai during the war--to distinguish it from the Hue airport in the Citadel), was once a huge Army and Marine complex. It can be seen from the highway and is now a commercial airfield. The road parallels the coast offering scenic vistas along the way, but is most memorable for the 21 km long, 1627ft, Hai Van mountain pass. A new 3.9 mile tunnel cuts through the mountain, but we took the windy road. At the peak elevation there are old fortifications and some refreshment and souvenir stands. The view of Danang was moderately good through the haze. Generally the skies were clearer the farther south we headed from Hanoi. As we drove into the outskirts of Danang, we passed Red Beach where Marines landed in 1965. This area is totally developed now. We checked into the Grand Mercure Hotel within eyesight of the international airport.

The next day we took a city tour taking in China Beach, Monkey Mountain, Marble Mountain, glimpses of the old Danang airbase and the abandoned Marble mountain facility, the new Dragon Bridge, and the Museum of Cham Sculpture. Several misconceptions were cleared up in my mind. I had Red Beach confused with China Beach and Monkey Mountain and Marble Mountain confused. There is a Temple in a cave inside Marble Mountain that was used as a Viet Cong field hospital during a battle. Some reports say it was in continuous use, but I'm somewhat skeptical of its long term use. Monkey Mountain is the large mountain on the peninsula northeast of Danang. It had, and still has, radar and radio facilities at the top. There was also a large helicopter pad, since abandoned. Seen from the top China Beach stretches a curving 20 miles to the south.

Dave Skilling left the group at this point and returned home. Charlie Tutt, Rick Hartnack, and I soldiered on the following day and took in the "sights" south of Danang at Chu Lai, Hill 55, An Hoa, the Liberty Bridge, and "Football Island." Charlie and Rick, who flew Marine F4s, found the remains of their barracks area at Chu Lai. Charlie, who served a tour in 'Nam as a platoon leader before going to flight school, and Rick recounted stories of their experiences and remembrances of the other locations we visited this day. "Football Island," in the Thu Bon River, was the scene of an intense fire fight Charlie was involved with. Liberty Bridge, which spanned the Thu Bon River, enabled Marines to supply  An Hoa. All that remains today are some pilings sticking out of the sand. A new highway bridge is under construction nearby.

In the morning, we split again. Charlie and I flew to Nha Trang. Later in the day Rick departed Danang on his epic two day journey home.

What is now the Nha  Trang airport today is the old Cam Ranh Bay. Our hotel was beachfront near Herky Hill, the C-130 crew quarters at CRB. Funny and also ironic was the fact all the guests were vacationing Russians. What a doleful looking group--they never smiled. On a walk along the beach, in contrast to the war years, it is littered with trash.

From CRB, it is a scenic forty-five minute drive on a modern coastal highway to Nha Trang city. Years ago, when taking off to the west from Nha Trang airbase, our flight path took us by a huge white Buddha. Charlie and I hired a driver to visit this site, the Long Son Pagoda. It honors five Buddhist monks who immolated themselves in  1963 to protest government prosecution. The old  Nha Trang airport, the one  right in the middle of the city, is closed and clear of any vegetation or structures. Probably plans are in the works for its development as it is prime real-estate  in this resort city. Another attraction worth seeing in Nha Trang are the historic Cham Thap Ba Towers.

The flight from CRB to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC, Saigon) was quick. In my two years of flying C-130s in Vietnam, CRB and TSN were my home bases, so it was somewhat nostalgic to takeoff and land there. CRB is nothing like it was...the sprawling main US supply port. And the Saigon air base has shrunk to a fraction of its military size. Development has encroached all around TSN leading to the development of a new airport at Long Thanh, 25 miles northeast of HCMC. We stayed at the historic Continental Hotel in the center of town. I remember it as packed with US military back in the day. Today it, the Rex, Majestic, and Caravelle are busy tourist hotels. Dong Khoi (Tudo)  Street, the Ben Thanh market, the War Remnants museum, and other sites are within easy, but sweaty, walking distance of the hotels.

In Saigon Les Stevens, COO, gave us a tour of the Jetstarpacific offices and he and his wife Phuong were generous in sharing several of their favorite restaurants. Their hospitality was much appreciated.

Alas, the trip came to a close. The long flight back to Atlanta was something that had to be endured, and served as a reminder of the incredible US effort necessary to supply such a distant war--amazingly, half way around the world! If the Ho Chi Minh trail is hailed as an incredible achievement, our logistical effort at such great distance is heroic in its own right.

I found another report of our PAF/US pilot meeting:

(May 2) What is my take away from the trip?

For the veterans who participated with me there is closure and reconciliation. There is the realization that after over forty years, the people and countries have moved on. As a veteran, images are still vivid in my mind of the past but what exists today is something totally different. I wanted to see things as they were, but that no longer exists. A younger generation has a new perspective and is responsible for the future now. The American Vietnam experience will not be forgotten, but is relegated to the  history books. Vietnam veterans are the WWII generation of our youth.

What did we accomplish back then? People say we "lost" the war, but that depends on how you look at it. I think Vietnam represents a failure of our foreign policy certainly, but not the war as brave Americans fought it. By 1975, when the South collapsed, American combat forces had long been withdrawn. There was little public or political will left for us  to reengage in support of the corrupt South Vietnamese government. Ironically for all the propaganda about a people's revolution, the country was taken in a conventional military campaign by the North, not a people's uprising. Taking a broad view, the Vietnam War was a proxy war with the Soviet Union. The Soviets may have won a  "battle," but they lost the bigger war--the Cold War.

Vietnam trip April 10-27, 2016 Part I

Dear Friends,

(April 18) I am writing from the town of Khe Sanh. It is a few miles away from the Combat Base, which we visited. There is a museum on the site, a couple helicopters, an A model C-130 (captured when South Vietnam fell) and some army equipment, but not much else. The base was leveled when the Marines left.  Ditto for Lang Vei, the Special Forces camp that was overrun by the NVA with heavy casualties. A monument featuring a Russian PT 76 tank is the only thing to see there. However the geographic features have not changed and by being here one can put a geographical "face to the name" of the place so to speak and get a better understanding of the battle.

To get to Khe Sanh we drove along the DMZ from Dong Ha, stopped at the Camp Carroll site (nothing remains), and passed the Rockpile. Like all the old fields of battle I've visited, the peacefulness of the area is in sharp contrast to the horror that once existed.

This is my second visit to Vietnam since the war. On that trip we spent time in Hanoi and HCMC (Saigon), but nothing in between This trip is making up for that. I am traveling with Dave Skilling, a USAF Misty FAC pilot, and a Marine F4 Phantom crew (pilot and RIO), Charlie Tutt and Rick Hartnack. They flew missions over the Ho Chi Minh trail.

From Hanoi we flew to Dong Hoa and met up with our guide and driver. We visited the Phong Nha caves, saw the  Vinh Moc tunnels, and crossed the Hein Luong  bridge over the Bien Hai river at DMZ as we travelled to Khe Sanh. From here we will drive through the A Shau valley to Hue and Danang, then fly to Nha Trang and HCMC.

Today Vietnam is a country at peace. The people are friendly towards Americans and benefit from an open economy. Still it is a single party communist government and the country has a host of problems.

The first part of the trip was a meeting between American and Vietnamese pilots in Hanoi. This was the result of the friendship between Charlie Tutt and General Soat. They met as businessmen starting an airline a few years ago. They thought it would be a good idea to bring former combatants together as reconciliation. It was an amazing experience and I am privileged to have been part of it. Here are video links to local broadcasts of the event:

Well, I am finishing this up in Hue. It's 6:14 am and we will soon recommence our tour. Today we will visit the Citadel (heavy Marine fighting there during TET) and drive to Danang. This has been a great experience. Vietnam has changed dramatically and there is reason to be optimistic for future US/Vietnam relations.

- Jim
