Dave,

Since you are the go to guy in ORD I thought I would update you on former ORD F/O Ron Smeltzer.  This is just in from his wife Jane Tande:

Informing everyone that my husband, Ron, is in Ronald Reagan ICU fighting a severe case of meningitis. He contracted it after a routine nasal surgery to remove polyps. If not for the brilliant neurosurgeon who immediately put a drainage tube in Ron's skull/brain, he would not have survived the night!!!! Few days later, Ron had to undergo another surgery to close the hole leading to his brain that was allowing air to get to his brain. The operation was a success!!!! He is improving everyday. Thanks to all our neighbors, friends and family for all their love and support. You all have helped us tremendously while dealing with this nightmare experience. This is his loving girl, Christine, who has barely left his side.

Bob Hartl

Ron is currently a B-777 Captain in DTW:

Subject: Leo update
Leo is at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Here is the latest I have:
The surgery was a little more complicated than even the surgeon thought, few more things to repair, but shouldn't impede his recovery.  They think he'll be out of ICU tomorrow afternoon. Never seen so many tubes coming out from someone!!  Should take his breathing tube out tonight; his numbers looked good whatever that is.
God Bless Leo,
David W. Skjervn
