My SkyMiles account got a note from Delta entitled “The Reasons You Fly”
“It
may be one plane, going to one destination, but no one journey there is the
same.
We're inspired by each different journey and each unique view from above. Thank you for being a SkyMiles member and making us part of your journey. Happy holidays! ENJOY THE VIEW”

While I appreciate the
note, along with the reason to fly, I can think of a few reasons NOT to fly!
How about you?

Loyd’s question below refers to the recently
highlighted Delta Employee and Retiree Care Fund.
“I wish to thank John and Julian for
this important information and think it soooo important that it should be
shared with entire PCN before the next High Life publication. Please read
carefully and step up for yourself or another retiree who could use this
help! Mark”

Subject: DELTA people in need
How can we find out those in need of help and what they need
to help them ? Loyd Freeman,Retired Captain lrfree@bellsouth.net
Editor: I want to thank Loyd for the question. The way we can help fellow retirees is simply
to “know” a special circumstance that can use help and bring it to the funds
attention. In the last issue a FO
retiree was brought forward by a caring friend.
Maybe you know someone who’s bank account has been depleted by medical
bills, and if so, bring the name to the fund board’s attention.
The
Care Fund is directed by a dedicated volunteer board of employees and retirees
who establish guidelines to direct the fund and evaluate grants to assist
people in need. Complete details, including guidelines to determine eligibility
and instructions to apply for a grant, are available on the Care Fund portal
located under Employee Info, Delta People Care Funds. The online Care Fund
Grant Application is available on My
Self Service.
For
questions, please contact either of your Retiree Representatives on the Board:

Never give
up on Family or friends
I received a
phone call from a friend and he said that Captain Earl (not his last name) had
a major stroke and was not expected to live. Captain Earl was considered
a Patriarch of Delta Airlines. All the flight crews enjoyed flying with him. He
had been a WWII pilot and had many interesting stories to tell on our long
cross-country flights.
I asked what
hospital Captain Earl was in. I was told Parkland. As soon as I could I called
Parkland Hospital to check the condition of Captain Earl and if visitors were
allowed. The first five-phone call I made I got the routine message, “If this
is an emergency, hang up and call 911.” Finally I got a real person on the
phone and she transferred me to the stroke unit. When I inquired about Captain
Earl the ‘Mother Superior’ on duty told me that she could not release
information about him because I was not a family member. I asked, “Can I come
and see him?” MS said, “He is not in the hospital.” “Where is he,” I asked. MS
said, “He has been transferred to a hospice home.” “Where,” I asked. MS said,
“I can’t tell you because you are not a relative.” I then asked, “Is there any
way I can find him.” MS said, “I can give you his son’s phone number and you
will have to talk to him to get permission to visit.”
I called the
number and got Captain Earl’s son. I introduced myself as a Delta Captain
and that Earl and I were very good friends. He said, “Dad is dying. In fact I
am now in the funeral home making arrangements for his funeral.” I asked if I
could see him. He said, “He is in a Hospice Home in Granbury, which is three
hours away. He will have passed before you get here.” For some reason I knew
that I must try to see Captain Earl.
When I got
to the Hospice House and was directed to Earl’s room I was in disbelief of his
condition. All life support was removed from his body. His mouth was wide open,
his eyes half open, and he was struggling to breathe. I asked the Hospice nurse
about his condition and she said, “He is dying and it won’t be long.” I asked
if I could pray for him and she said, “I wish you would.”
I am no
Devine Healer like you see on TV, but I felt my friend needed a simple prayer.
I asked the Lord to save his soul and to raise him up if was His will. I had
very little faith in my prayer, but it was a sincere prayer.
As I started
to leave the room Earl’s son walked in. He said, “Would you please contact the
other Delta pilots when he dies. It won’t be long” “Yes, I will,” I said. I
gave him my phone number and departed.
He did not
call that day. He did not call the next day, so I called him. I said, “Sir you
forgot to called me when your dad died. He said, “After you departed yesterday
dad started to move around and asked for food. In fact he is eating now. We
have dismissed the Hospice nurse.” “Wow,” I thought. My little prayer worked.
That is by no means to lift me up, but to give credit to Jesus.
I went to
see Earl a few days later. He was eating, talking, and sitting up. I went back
about 10 days later and his room was empty. I thought the worse that he had
died and no one notified me. I hurried to the nurse station and asked about his
death. The nurse said, “That is our miracle baby. He has gone home.”
That was
over 6 years ago. Captain Earl called me a couple days ago and sounded great.
He told me that he was living in NC, had his own two-bedroom apartment, and was
driving all over town at age 92.
So never
give up on your family members or friends. No matter how bad the situation may
appear we have a great God that can intercede, no matter how weak our faith is.

Subject: EXPLANATION:
What is Delta.Tube...???
Date: December
21, 2015 at 13:14:45 EST
Thanks again to Jim Hoogerwerf for this
explanation. Dave
Good question…
“Delta.Tube" is like “YouTube," but for employees. Delta.Tube videos are made by the company to inform employees of Delta news. They are only shown on the company’s internal cable network.
However we can see them by logging on to DELTANET (like you do for traveling standby). When the site opens, just below the DELTANET name you will see a prompt “DNN.” Clicking on that opens a drop down menu. Selecting Delta.Tube opens a page with all the videos in chronological order. The most recent one is highlighted.
The one on Delta’s DC-3 with Merle should be out in a couple of days.

Thanks to outgoing DGW

Hi Dave,
Our very own Merle Baggett is a movie star! He was interviewed yesterday for a video on the 75th year of Delta's inauguration of DC-3 service on Dec 24, 1940. Five employees from that era were interviewed and Merle (hired in 1946) was the pilot representative. Merle did really well and with his recollections provides a personal touch to the story of iconic airplanes.
The video is expected to be available around Dec. 22 for viewing on the DeltaTube. It may be made public at some future date.
See you at the next breakfast and have a wonderful Christmas.

IE 9 Required for DeltaNet Access Beginning Jan. 1, 2016
November 20, 2015 By Staff Writer, Corporate Communications
Delta computer equipment is being upgraded to Windows 7 and Internet Explorer (IE) 9 to meet Delta’s security reliability standards. The project will be completed by Dec. 31, 2015....
After December 2015, IE 6, 7 or 8 users will not be able to log into DeltaNet through the extranet. Employees accessing DeltaNet remotely through personal computers or laptops will need IE 9 or above IE10, IE11, Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.
In addition to security reliability standards concerns IE 6, 7, 8 will not function with the upgrades planned for many Delta applications in 2016.

How do I determine the version of Internet Explorer I have?
Follow these helpful steps in order to determine what Internet
Explorer version is running on your computer.
Web
browsers frequently update themselves and sometimes it’s hard to keep track of
which version is on your computer. You can determine which version of Internet
Explorer is installed on your computer with a few simple steps. To determine the version of Internet Explorer installed on your computer:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click the Help menu, and then click About Internet Explorer.
3. Next to Version , the first number that appears (example: 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9) indicates the version of Internet Explorer installed on your computer.
Stay up to date
Make
sure you've always got the latest version of Internet Explorer by turning
on automatic upgrades. You'll get updates to Internet Explorer through
Windows Update, including upgrades to the latest version.
To turn on automatic upgrades
1.
Open the desktop, and then tap or click the
Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar.
- Tap or click the Tools button (or tap or click Help in the Menu bar), and then tap or click About Internet Explorer.
3.
Select the Install new versions automatically
check box, and then tap or click Close.
