Aircraft Orders:
Looking back at our careers we were blessed to be a part
of an expanding airline. In fact when I
got hired in 1978 I think the seniority list had about 1800. Now the merged and grown airline has over
12,000 pilots on the list.
Aircraft orders were always big deals, such as the recent one highlighted in this High
Life. For the airline, choosing the “wrong”
airplane can spell marketing and maintenance disaster and at the minimum fall years
behind the competition. On the other
hand choosing the “right” airplane could propel the airline in to levels
untouchable. We saw both during our
careers.
With the recent announced order, Delta was certainly
cautious and patient. The 787 bypass and
the cautious amount of “expansion” orders will be judged as to value in
time. My son, on the A320 in DTW, is now
living out many of those feelings that we had when orders were announced. The airline is about airplanes and that was
true then and certainly true today.
