Below find what I call an "elegy" for my Western
classmate, Doug Hellwig.=
=20
I know that his widow, Loretta, tried to give out as much information as=
=20
she had about Doug's combat tour in Vietnam and his career
at WAL and DAL=
,=20
but I was moved to put it into some kind of context. Attached is the wor=
d=20
version and a photo of Doug at Bien Hoa forwarded by Loretta that I cropp=
ed.=20
Feel free to use it anyway
you like. Permission to use the photo
was=20
already granted by Loretta.

My Western Airlines classmate, Doug Hellwig, died on July 16 at the age=
of=20
71. As far as I know, he
was the first of our group of eighteen
to =E2=
=80=9Cfly=20
west.=E2=80=9D On May 9,
1972 we formed the second full class
that Weste=
rn hired=20
after the industry-wide Great Furlough of 1969-72. Although nearly all=
of us=20
were veterans of the Vietnam War, we were lucky to have gotten airline=20
flying jobs at all. The big hiring boom had been in 1965-68, and conseque=
ntly,=20
our careers over the years progressed very slowly as it would for most of=
=20
the veterans of that war.
At first, we had high hopes. We flew with=20
pilots who had become captains in less than four years.
Some of them had=
=20
actually been under thirty years old. But
for us, Seniority was to be a=
cruel=20
god, and it would take eighteen or twenty years to get into the left seat=
of=20
the most junior aircraft like the Boeing 737.
It was probably a good thi=
ng=20
that so many of us like Doug loved the pure art required of up-and-down=
=20
short-haul flying.
=20
One of the ironies of the airline business is that, unlike military=20
squadrons, we never got to fly with each other. We didn=E2=80=99t get to=
know each oth...

The Earth From Space: Guess the U.S. City at Night
By TAYLOR UMLAUF
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station
have captured stunning views of Earth from space. That is, when they’re not
busy making repairs to the station, researching 3-D printing in space, or
playing soccer. They take many of those photos when the Earth is draped in the
darkness of night. Those nighttime photos often reveal the vast differences in
shapes, sizes, and brightness of urban areas on the planet.
Can you guess which of the American cities
pictured at night is which?
Note: all images have been oriented with north to the top.
An easy one for starters…rd
