FLY-IN/DRIVE-IN – A BIG SUCCESS

On May 21, 2014, Peachstate Aerodrome was the place--to be and be seen--to meet and socialize with old friends. The first Delta Golden Wings “Fly-in/Drive-in” was a great success. Over 100 active and retired pilots and their spouses, friends and relatives converged on Peachstate airport in Williamson, Georgia to attend the event. At about 10:30 AM, they began arriving in their airplanes and automobiles. A variety of aircraft were flown in, including a 2013 Robinson R44 Raven helicopter owned by retired Captain and Mrs. Rocky Bailey. All retired and current Delta pilots were welcome, whether or not they were DGW members.

Williamson is south of Atlanta in Spalding County, ten miles from Griffin, Georgia and on the drive there, the surrounding rural area showed sparkling ponds/lakes and beautiful “waves of grain” (nearby wheat fields in their prime). Ron Alexander had the surrounding fields mowed and his beautiful red, black and white 1935 Waco and former Braniff (later a corporate craft) DC-3 were parked in the fields adjacent to the grass runway, directly in front of the Barnstormer Grill, for all to admire. As aircraft and vintage cars arrived they were put on display. Ron Alexander’s flyable 1917 Curtis Jenny replica was kept inside the hangar since the wind was too much for its minimal control surfaces. Jack Baker assisted in parking older “show cars” driven in by participants.
The American Airways hangar, modeled after the original at the historic Atlanta’s Candler Field, houses the Candler Field Museum, Barnstormer Grill, meeting rooms, and shops. Just inside the museum entrance, DGW president Jim Pancharian and wife Carolyn, Mrs. Julian (Joan) Black and Mrs. Jack (Kathy) Baker manned the sign-in/registration table.

The Barnstormer Grill was packed for lunch. An extensive salad/pasta/fruit bar with a pot of steamy hot vegetable soup was available. Waitresses took food orders from the restaurant menu for customers while other attendees milled about the display of aircraft and special show cars with the main interest being the exchange of greetings among pilots that had not seen each other for some time. Rollin Jackson said he felt like he was back in the old times, sitting around the flight lounge and visiting while awaiting his next departure.
The American Airways hangar doors were opened and chairs arranged inside for a short 2pm briefing given by Ron Alexander, DGW Secretary Jim Hoogerwerf and Membership Chairman Julian Black. They explained how this fly-in/drive-in was planned, expressed their pleasure in the number of attendees and announced another to be held on Wednesday, May 20th next year. As you read this message, we encourage all Atlanta-area pilots, and those out-of-towners that can, to join us when we meet in 2015.

This year’s “Fly-in/Drive-in” was the first of what will be an annual event sponsored by the Delta Golden Wings and the Candler Field Museum, to encourage the camaraderie and conviviality of the Delta pilot group and in support the Candler Field Youth Program. There is no admission fee but a donation to the Candler Field Youth Program is requested. Workers were finishing construction of a new metal hangar, replicating Doug Davis’ Hangar, the very first hangar on Candler Field (early Atlanta Airport) built in 1925. It will be dedicated to the aircraft restoration work by the youngsters in the aviation training program.

A few pilots live in houses on the aerodrome with their own hangars either attached or nearby. One of those is retired Captain Harry Ballance who was flying his Stearman before others arrived. He is in the process of restoring an older single-engine plane once flown by his father. The first person to arrive was DGW secretary Jim Hoogerwerf in the Cessna 150 he actually soloed when he was twenty-one. Next to arrive overhead was a Stearman four-ship formation flown by Pete Smart, Cal Tax, Jim Ratliff and Larry Taylor. Among the attendees were more senior pilots Merle Baggett, Jake Longino and Joe Ivey and a number who are closing in on their 80’s.
Listed below are those in attendance. We would like for you to plan on attending next year. Join many of those listed below that were attendees at this first Fly-In/Drive-In event, and bring either your airplane or your older automobile.*

Subject: 3rd Thursday of the month ORD Delta DC-9 Layover

This coming Thursday, the 17th of July already! is the 3rd Thursday of the month and time to see if you can still layover the old Delta DC-9 way of cheap beer, great pizza and fantastic war stories.  As always, everyone and anyone is invited so bring a friend or fellow airline enthusiasts to Nick's Pizza and Pub, 856 Pyott Rd, Crystal Lake, IL starting at 19:00.
See you there, David W. Skjerven

P.S.  HARD TO BELIEVE BUT IT IS TIME TO START MAKING PLANS TO ATTEND THE ANNUAL WORLD FAMOUS ORD FLY-IN.  IT IS ALWAYS THE SECOND WEDNESDAY OF SEPTEMBER WHICH IS THE 10TH THIS YEAR.

P.P.S.
Here is a picture of me on what Leo called my "special mission to Norway":

And it was special. I gave a speech and read a letter from the Governor of North Dakota at the centennial celebration of this Lincoln monument given to the people of Norway from the people of North Dakota on July 4th 1914 as a gift for the 100 year signing of the Norwegian Constitution.  My Great Grandparents were there as part to the Governor's delegation.  Their son, my Grandfather was picked to carry the American flag at the head of the dedication parade and placement of the statue in Frogner Park, Oslo, Norway. So to celebrate this 32 Skjerven family members and friends traveled to Norway to once again be a part of this event.  Each year around the 4th of July there has been a ceremony at this statue.  What is significant about that, is that it was the only public gathering that the Nazis would allow when they occupied Norway doing WW II.
This now is once again something very special for my family since all of my daughters, son-in-laws and all 5 grandchildren were present with my wife and I there in Norway, 3 generations.  We all carried small American flags to honor what my Grandfather did 100 years ago.  At this year's celebration there was a great band that played the national anthems and patriotic music; an impressive Honor Guard; a member of the Norwegian Parliament gave a speech and laid a flower wreath and the US Embassy's  Charge d'affaires spoke. Our group then toured beautiful Norway for 10 days stopping to visit the Skjerven family farm and the farm my mother's parents came from.  Several of us also spent 3 days in Iceland since one of my Grandmothers immigrated from there.  It was a very special family tour.
