Delta debuts on Fortune's 'Most Admired' list, named top airline

February 27, 2014
Fortune magazine named Delta No. 48 among the Top 50 of its World’s Most Admired Companies All-Starlist today for the first time ever. That honor was made even more significant when Fortune also named Delta the most admired airline in its 2014 World’s Most Admired airlines list for the third time in four years.
In a memo, Richard congratulated and thanked employees and noted that the honor recognizes the hard work and great accomplishments of Delta people worldwide.
“Thank you for your continued focus on living by our Rules of the Road and executing on our Flight Plan despite the many challenges we have already faced this year,” Richard said. “You are truly the most admired employees in the global airline business.”
The Fortune Top 50 rankings are based on a survey which asks top executives and directors across all industries to identify the 10 companies they most admire, regardless of industry, from a pre-determined list. The annual World’s Most Admired Companies airline rankings are based on the results of a global survey of airline executives, boards of directors and industry analysts who are asked to rate companies in their industry on the following criteria: people management, social responsibility to the community and environment, quality of management, innovation, quality of products or services, use of corporate assets, financial soundness, long-term investment value and global competitiveness.
“None of this would be possible without the collaborative efforts of all our people – the best people in the business,” Richard said. “It is clear that when we work together and ‘keep our backpacks on,’ we can achieve great things.”
In addition to the rankings, Delta is also the focus of a feature article in Fortune’s upcoming Most Admired Companies print issue. The article details how Delta has impacted the airline industry’s transformation and how its unique business decisions are positioning the airline for success in the future. A Fortune reporter visited Delta’s Atlanta General Offices in early 2014 to speak and visit with Richard and other Delta leaders.
“With so much going right, it's easy for Anderson to make the case that Delta's turbulent times are indeed in the past,” the story said.
Fortune’s ‘Most Admired’ issue will be available on March 17.

Detroit News   Feb 26 01:09pm
Companies from Delta Air Lines Inc. to AT&T Inc. are lobbying state legislators across the country saying laws perceived as anti-gay are bad for business.
Editor: Why is important for any company to weigh in on a political issue?  Should we expect Delta to come out pro-life or pro-choice?

NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this image on February 19, when ice covered 80.3 percent of the lakes. This false-color image uses a combination of shortwave infrared, near infrared, and red (MODIS bands 7-2-1) that helps distinguish ice from snow, water, and clouds. Ice is pale blue (thicker ice is brighter), open water is navy, snow is blue-green, and clouds are white or blue-green (depending on temperature and composition). Image via NASA.
Ice cover on North America’s Great Lakes reached 88 percent in mid-February 2014, levels not observed since 1994. The average maximum ice extent since 1973 is just over 50 percent. It has surpassed 80 percent just five times in four decades.
Nathan Kurtz, cryospheric scientist NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said:
Persistently low temperatures across the Great Lakes region are responsible for the increased areal coverage of the ice.
Cold air and winds remove heat from the fresh water until it reaches the freezing point, at which point ice begins to form on the surface. Kurtz added:
Low temperatures are the dominant mechanism for thickening the ice, but secondary factors like clouds, snow, and wind also play a role.
Scientists say that there was an early ice season this year, owing to cold temperatures in the fall and early winter. Ice was reported on bays and harbors of the Great Lakes as early as the end of November, as opposed to the normal timing of mid-December.
Bottom line: Ice cover on North America’s Great Lakes reached 88 percent in mid-February 2014, levels not observed since 1994.

 Found Tsunami Camera
 Amazing..
Yu Muroga was doing his job making deliveries, when the March 11, 2011 earthquake hit in Japan. Unaware, like many people in the area, of how far inland the Tsunami would travel, he continued to drive and do his job. The HD camera mounted on his dashboard captured not only the earthquake, but also the moment he and several other drivers were suddenly engulfed in the Tsunami.
He escaped from the vehicle seconds before it was crushed by other debris and sunk underwater. His car and the camera
have only recently been recovered by the police. The camera was heavily damaged but a video expert was able to retrieve this footage.
