I am very impressed with what you are saying and doing to form a new organization for Delta pilots. I am a retired Delta captain with 36 years of services. My question is have you or are you thinking about the retired pilots past and present. There are about 3500 of us who would like to tell ALPA where to go!!

Cheers,

Ray Bell

Hi Ray,

I answered this exact question from a retiree two weeks ago….here is what I wrote:

I hope your golden years are good!  I have received this question several times recently from retirees with Delta's record profits showing up.  I know that DPA views the pilot group as more of a family as evidenced by our seniority block representation.  Having an equal say at the table means all issues get heard.  The question is how to get the retirees voice back at the table.  Doing the right thing is a basic premise of DPA and this idea would fall into that category in my opinion.  But I am just the guy making the vote happen.  It will be up to the Delta Pilot group to decide how we move forward.

I strongly urge you to go to our website, find the SURVEYS tab, and then place the idea of including retirees in the Contract Survey.  I will take this list of inputs, once we win, and drop it on the desks of the Seniority Block Representatives after our first election.  It will also get posted to the Pilot Group at large.  This may be your only chance to push the idea.  I would also suggest that you add another input that requests a Retiree Advocate position within the DPA Leadership.  That could take you much further down the road.

Thanks for writing and for your support!

Tim Caplinger

GO DPA!!!

As retirees - We need to think about this. If we got the retired pilots behind them. It may help our cause. We need to meet with them and feel them out, about how they feel about us.

Travis,

I recently learned of The Delta Pilots Association, (http://delta-pilots.org/) an organization formed to represent Delta Pilots in lieu of ALPA.  Although we retirees may not have a direct interest,  I believe we have an interest.  Since I was unaware of DPA,  I believe many others may also be unaware.  If you would, please let the group know.   The web site is very interesting and convincing.

Randy Turner, who is still an active Delta pilot, has a different view of DPA. He sent me the following email.

Travis,

Pass along to the group to take the DPA propaganda with caution.  They take a lot of things out of context, half truths and , in some cases, flat out lies.

The good thing is that they are keeping ALPA on their toes and we (who are still working) are getting a lot more information from ALPA than we used to get.

I used to be on their mailing list, but have stopped because I got tired of their diatribe.

Editor: Concerning the DPA, I am well aware that there is a variety of opinions.  The overall main reason that the DPA has gained traction is the potential ALPA liability from the TWA law suit.  It could, however,  be a better situation for us pilot retirees.  As card carrying members of the “3500” we all know that ALPA doesn’t represent our situation and in fact helped create it.  Tim Caplinger, leader of the DPA movement, has been responsive and sympathetic to our situation and it may well be a good thing to help support this change of representation for Delta pilots and retired pilots.
