Notices
Thank you for sending me notices of my fellow pilots and
their families. Even though I have been retired for 25 years I still
remember some of these wonderful people. Be nice to me when my time comes.
I was never an English major but saying "He HIRED ON
etc just does not sound proper to me. Sounds as if the person
was going to work, lets say, on an oil rig or a construction job
other than a professional airline pilot. No there is nothing wrong with the two
previous jobs that I mentioned. "He/She was hired by Delta Airlines June 6
1953 etc, etc. It just not sound proper to me but I am just
one 85 year old grumpy Grampy. Like to hear your
opinion. Thanks. Frank E Keefe
Editor: Frank, on behalf of Carol and
all the hard work that she does on our “Flight West” page I thank you for the
compliment about the work and notices.
It does not happen without effort and it is all volunteer. Most of the text of the notices is not
prepared by us. Most of the text is
copied from other sources. We don’t feel
it is our place to edit these notices but rather try to copy and include them in
their entirety. So from time to time we see grammatical problems with a notice
but as mentioned publish them as received.
As to the “hired on” wording, some things in the English language are
generational. I suspect that this is a
very acceptable phrase in today’s world.
In any case, realize that all things done on the Flight West page are
intentioned to be respectful and an honor to the deceased. Please accept all notices regardless of the
construction in that light.
