Subject: Career Day
My name is Gregory Hutchinson.
I am a school counselor in Marietta, Georgia. Each year we put on a
Career Day program for our students. This day allows them to see and hear
different speakers from different jobs and careers. We are looking for a pilot who lives in the metro Atlanta area to come and
speak. Career day is not until March 21, 2014 but I know it may be
hard to find someone to come and speak so I am asking early. Please let
me know if someone in your organization can do it or if there is someone I
should contact directly.
Thank you for your time!

Mark,
Blair and I are also Northern Michigan fans. We just stayed
at a beautiful B&B that is equidistance from our 3 favorite Michigan towns
- Charlevoix, Boyne City, and Petoskey. We head north whenever we can.

Subject: Quick question: DELTA NEWS FROM LEADERSHIP
CONFERENCE
Mark,
I have received
the info below from different sources, but no one can tell me where they
"found" this info and I cannot find it on DeltaNet. Someone
suggested you may have posted it on PCN; however, I cannot find it there
either.
Do you happen to
know the source of this info other than "Delta Van" who posted it on
his blog? I have no idea how to get in touch with Van to ask him
about his source and I hate to send out anything to DCW that I cannot verify as
a reliable source.
Thanks in
advance,
Sue (Delta Clipped
Wings newsletter editor)
Editor: Sue, I got the
following Delta info from a couple of

(thanks to Diane
Williams for sending this information)
· With great public perception, the Delta “Brand” has allowed
Delta to charge up to a 15% premium on flights. This split in cost for the same
flight can continue to go up based on how well Delta polishes their brand.
·
In July alone…Delta made $500 million dollars. Proposed profit for
the year will break $2 BILLION!
·
As the Refinery, AeroMexico and Virgin Atlantic investments start
to return dividends, expected profits in the next years are expected to top
$4B-$5B!
·
Delta stock price has increased 132% in the last year. Outpacing
every other airline and eclipsing the gains of the S&P 500 index.
·
Delta is now qualified and expects to be added back to the S&P
500 Index within the year (we would be there now but there are no open spots
currently) This, alone, is expected to push our stock price up at least another
10-25% as investors will be required to own certain %’s of our stock for
investment purposes.
·
The $13 Billion worth of underfunded Pension
Plan is scheduled to be paid back early.
·
End of this year, our total debt is to be paid down to $10B from
the original high of $17B. This took 4 years. Carrying $7B debt is the target
and Delta will reach this goal within 3 years (with a decelerated payback
plan!)
·
New Long Range Fleet purchase should be announced within 60 Days.
This will replace the 747-400’s when their time comes. We will only fly 2
engine aircraft. (sorry A-380 and 747-8)
·
To improve and protect the “Delta Brand”, Richard promised to act
like the CEO of every commuter airline working for Delta. Delta now watches the
operational matrixes of Compass, Express Jet, and Endeavor (formerly Pinnacle)
to hold them to the same Delta Mainline parameters.
·
The Employee Stock Purchase Option should be coming online by
October.
·
Mobile Electronic Devices should be approved for use on Delta
flights within 30 Days. We’ll be the first airline to be able to allow this and
as far as anyone knows, no other airline has started pursuing this. We may be
the only airline to allow this for up to a year!
·
Mentioned that United/Continental merger is about to “go into the
fog” of integration. Given their track record, Delta expects to steal A LOT of
passengers from them during this period of time.
·
American/USAir merger could result in a need for cash and the DCA
slots (that we traded USAir for their LGA slots) could come available for
purchase. We have cash on hand to move on this if this opportunity becomes
available. Then we’ll own both. The USAir slots at LGA and the ones we swapped
for in DCA.
·
The Oil Refinery is only operating at about 50% capacity but has
been able to flood the “jet fuel” market enough to cause reduced jet fuel
prices; resulting in a $500M a year reduction in costs. (unfortunately,
ALL airlines have shared this benefit, but it is killing those who hedged high
on their fuel purchases)
·
The B717 Fleet of 88 aircraft (yeah twin jets!) will reenter
markets that the commuter jets over took during the “dark years”. This will
bring more travelers back to mainline travel and allow the commuter jets to
seek other new markets.
·
Seattle is ramping up to be our next major international hub. Our
partner Alaska Airlines will be helping feed passengers into Seattle for us to
launch overseas.
·
And the final point I thought was interesting, when asked what
their favorite “Brand” was; Richard Anderson prefers STIHL chainsaws and Ed
Bastian prefers Starbucks coffee…weird.
Airlines adapt procedures to aim for faster boarding
Boarding passengers on aircraft in the most efficient way has long been a goal of airlines. Recently, American Airlines and United Airlines have tweaked the boarding process. American is allowing passengers without carry-on luggage for overhead bins to board first, while United reduced the number of its boarding groups. DFW Airport to help fund boost in customs staffing
Dallas/Fort Worth Airport is part of a pilot program to increase funding for U.S. Customs and Border Control agents. "It will allow us to pay for some of the costs of federal agents in DFW Airport's customs area in Terminal D," said airport spokeswoman Cynthia Vega. "As of next week we are going to start talks with the government to work out an agreement about how much we can fund to alleviate the long lines at customs." Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Texas) (8/2)

Airlines focus on Los Angeles International Airport
Delta Air Lines announced plans for an hourly shuttle between Los Angeles and San Francisco starting Aug. 1. United Airlines and American Airlines both have around 19% of traffic at the Los Angeles International Airport. "[LAX] has always been kind of a Boston; no one has ever really owned all of it," Delta spokesman Anthony Black said. Bloomberg Businessweek (8/6)

Over the last
year, I’ve been hearing a lot about the new Aloft hotel brand from Starwood.
Since I have not had the chance to sleep over in one yet, I asked for a tour of
the Aloft San Francisco Airport, one of the three Aloft hotels in the Bay
Area—all of which have opened in the last year. (8/7)
