Mark's Remarks - HL 166 (1)

As a reminder my $17,000 DCCU scam turned out just fine thanks to quickly seeing the transfers and getting some great help from CU agents. The quick actions prevented most if not all  of the funds from actually leaving the CU.  When things like that happen it makes you re-think a lot of security and safety issues.  In this issue I would like to draw attention to how the phone can be an excellent tool for family security.

E911 and Phone Tracking:

Ok, you have heard of all the potentially problematic privacy issues by having your phone tracked by undesirables.  However, there is also a lot of good that can come from this technology as well.  I can tell you from my perspective I do not know why anyone would not activate their cellphone’s E911 feature.

A quick understanding of this feature is that the phone company and the police have access to the location of your phone IF you have this feature activated.  Why is that a good thing?  Well,  I can think of a myriad of reasons why that is a good thing, but let me tell you two quick stories.  First, in OH a couple of older ladies out for a weekend drive went missing.  They were undiscovered for weeks when they were found in a KY ravine deceased.  They had a cellphone but E911 was not active.  The second story involves the boston bombers.  They carjacked a Mercedes SUV but the owner’s phone with E911 active was in the car.  They were able to find the car with that knowledge.

You could loose your phone, get a purse stolen, or simply be incapacitated and need help.  With E911 on the cops can locate that phone.

I have cellphones for our elderly parents and I always tell them to take it wherever they go.  I am not sure they understand that if they get in trouble somewhere we can locate them because of that phone.  So for my money, let the  marketers know my whereabouts, I could care less. Let my family members see where I go, I have nothing to hide.  It is us, the family, who I really want to know where all our loved ones phones are.

Life360:

Going one better than activating that little E911 feature (which is on all modern cellphones), is to own a phone tracker app.  If I had young kids with phones or for that matter other loved ones this makes a lot of sense to be able to see their phone’s whereabouts.  This app will track all smartphones for FREE.  It will give you a few searches per month of non-smart phones.  If you pay for the premium service you get more features.

Listen, social media, modern technology and invasive eavesdropping can all be a problem.  But modern technology can be a blessing too.  Use phone tracking to, find a phone, find a lost purse, find a stolen car, or locate a non-communicating loved one.  All benefits of this modern technology.    I encourage you to activate all your cellphone’s E911 feature and consider a phone tracking app like Life360.
