Dear PCN (of over 2600 subscribers),

Kentucky musings:  Well, a couple of inches of white is on the ground and the birds are hard at the feeder.  Here in KY it isn’t unusual to see flocks of cardinals and have 7-10 cardinals around the feeder at any one time.  Sure pretty against the background.  Barb and I have a mission for the next week and it will likely take some years of our life.  We are heading to MI to watch the 5 munchins for one whole week.  There mommy and daddy are getting away on a much needed vacation.  I hope to be able to assemble a HL for next week but it’s a little up in the air since I don’t know if I will still be in one piece.

First flight:  My dad had returned from the war and spent a few years away from flying when he decided to join a local aviation club.  They had two airplanes under carports. They had a Tri-Pacer and a pretty beat up Aeronica Champ.  My dad wasn’t checked out in the Champ so he asked another member to give me a ride in it.  My first flight  (bet you can remember yours).  I was still in elementary school so pretty young and the pilot couldn’t talk to me very well in the tandem nor offer me any flying lessons.  But what he did, however, was show me the wonder of flight in this old ragwing and it made a lifelong impression.  While he was doing turns around a silo below I looked down and saw through to the ground.  The rubber grommet around the bottom of the stick was missing and so to the outside access panel.  It sure made that plywood floor seem thin and was kind of an eerie feeling but I got over it.  Looking at the terra firma from above is what stuck with me as it does with all pilots.  A lofty perch is a neat thing.  That Champ ride, propelled me in to scrimping and saving and starting ground school and lessons while still in high school.  Flying became a real passion.  While time and airline conditions have worn a little shine off the actual jobs in the field today, flying……….just plain old flying, is still the bomb.  This spring and summer,  go to an airshow or two and fall in love again!

Now, send in your first flight stories.  I’m sure all of us would enjoy it and relate to it very well.

Superbowl:  Don’t really have a dog in the fight.  Ravens are a rival in the AFC central so don’t care if they lose.   Pickin 49ers by 3.
