Looking For - HL 156 (1)

As a reminder to all who are “looking for someone” the PCN never shares contact info with anyone!  What we do instead is make an appeal (either direct or publicly in the newsletter) to a person about a party’s interest in getting in touch.  In this way the person looked for is in control of the connection.

Subject: Author seeks Delta crew from 1986

Mark,

The author and former 20/20 correspondent, Lynn Sherr, is writing an authorized biography of the astronaut Sally Ride. Ms. Sherr is trying to find the Delta crew that flew Sally Ride from ATL to Houston on January 28, 1986 which is when the Challenger exploded after liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center. I have excerpted parts of her e-mail to senior Delta management which explains her request.
I am writing about astronaut Sally Ride (authorized by the family, to be published in 2014 by Simon & Schuster). I'm trying to find out the name of the Captain of her flight from Atlanta to Houston (Jan. 28, 1986, during the time that includes the Challenger explosion at 11:38am.) , and if he is around, if he has any recollections of the day. I'd be most grateful if any of the ancient pilots (that includes me, except for the ancient part) might have a recollection. Here's the short version, as reported by one interviewer:

Sally Ride isn't given to public displays of emotion. But at the mention of Challenger, her face flushes. She recalls the day of the disaster, Jan. 28, 1986: She was traveling from the East Coast back to Houston on a commercial flight. The pilot announced that something had gone wrong seconds after the Challenger lifted off. Details sketchy.

Ride went numb. She reached for her driver's license, walked to the cockpit, showed the captain her identification and asked if she could listen in on news of Challenger on the radio. Once the plane landed, she took a cab to Mission Control.”

Mark, if you could publish this request on the PCN perhaps we could locate the captain or other crew members that were on that flight and put them in contact with Ms. Sherr. If any crew members respond positively to this request, they can contact me at either of the e-mail addresses listed below and I will put them in contact with Ms. Sherr. Thanks for your assistance Mark and I hope we hear from some of the crew members.

Best Regards,

Arnie
