Leisure Travel on Other
Airlines
Many airlines offer
space-available passes or reduced-rate tickets to Delta employees, retirees and
their eligible family members for leisure travel. While most airlines offer
Zonal Employee Discount (ZED) fares, there are some other airlines that offer
"industry discount/ID" tickets with discounts between 75 and 96
percent or service charge passes/tickets.
The Industry is moving
toward the elimination of paper tickets for employee interline travel. As
airlines gradually migrate to electronic ticketing, their ticketing procedures
will change. Please read the following information carefully and stay informed
of the latest policy/procedures for each carrier.

General ZED Q&A
General ZED Q&A
Q1. What is ZED?
A1. ZED, which stands for
Zonal Employee Discount, allows employees of airlines participating in the ZED
Program to
purchase reduced rate
standby transportation for leisure travel on other airlines. ZED fares are
fixed/standard fare levels
(High, Medium, Low)
applicable to global zones based on mileage. ZED is used instead of the
industry discount (e.g.
ID90, ID95, etc.) fare programs
for employee leisure travel.
Q2. Why has interline
travel converted from ID type agreements to ZED fares?
A2. Delta chose to become
a ZED participant because the ZED program has become the industry standard and
many carriers participate in it. The goal is to replace all ID type agreements
with ZED agreements. Had Delta not committed to changing to a ZED fare
agreement, those few carriers with lower fares levels would have increased our
fare levels to be comparable with ZED fares, resulting in the same expense for
our employees.
Q3. Are ZED fares less
expensive than ID agreements?
A3. Yes, in most cases.
ZED fares are based on nine zones, each representing a set number of miles.
Zone 1 covers segments up to 450 miles. Zone 9 extends out to 9,000 miles,
enough for a flight from Los Angeles to Sydney! Each zone has a corresponding
fare, which in most cases is lower than ID90.
Q4. On which airlines can
Delta employees purchase ZED tickets?
A4. Delta's goal is to
negotiate ZED medium fares in conjunction with interline ticketing and baggage
agreements. A current list of Delta's ZED partners is available on the Other
Airline Index (Delta Net).
Q5. Why is Delta's goal
to negotiate medium level ZED fares rather than ZED-low fares?
A5. Most carriers
participate at the ZED medium fare level. Delta will negotiate ZED low fares
with our SkyTeam and codeshare partners when possible.
Q6. Does this mean Delta
will no longer have ID75/90/95 discount agreements with other airlines?
A6. Delta intends to
ultimately transition all reduced rate employee travel agreements to ZED
agreements. Once an agreement with a carrier is converted to a ZED agreement
the ID discounts will no longer apply. Our Interline department is working very
hard to include more agreements as quickly as possible.
Q7. Will Delta employees
be allowed to travel on all other ZED members?
A7. No. Delta employees
may purchase ZED tickets for travel only on airlines where Delta has a ZED
agreement. Check the Other Airline Index (Delta Net) to validate the other
airline reduced rate agreement in effect at the time of travel.
Q8. Will all ZED
agreements be the same?
A8. In the spirit of
simplification, our goal would be to have the same agreement with all airlines,
however, check the Other Airline Index (Delta Net) to get specific policy and
guidelines for specific carriers.
Q9. Once I have purchased
a paper ZED ticket, will all other ZED airlines accept the paper ZED ticket?
A9. Only if the accepting
carrier has a paper ZED agreement with Delta and the following conditions are
met:
ZED Fares are based on
point to point and mileage. This also applies to through flights (i.e. ATL-
SLC- LAX) to provide a coupon if deplaned enroute.
Employee can use the same
paper ZED ticket on another carrier ONLY under the following conditions:
Origination and
destination points are within the mileage for Fare level. (i.e. ZM Fare– Zone 2
New routing is within
same mileage for Zone 2).
Delta has a ZED agreement
with the new carrier at the same fare level (or higher) of the original ticket
(i.e. ZL, ZM, ZH).
Employee must refund the
ZED ticket and purchase a new ZED ticket if the following changes occur:
Change to origination
and/or destination points are outside of the current ZED– Zone fare they are
holding. Change of itinerary now includes a connection point or change in
connection point.
Example: Employee holds a
paper ZED ticket for travel from JFK to MIA – ok to accept for travel from LGA
to FLL.
Q10. What are the
acceptable forms of payment and how long are ZED tickets valid?
A10. A credit card is the
only acceptable form of payment and ZED tickets are valid for 90 days from
original date of issue.
Q11. How do I calculate a
ZED fare?
A11. ZED fares are based
on mileage. To calculate a fare, Link to ID90 fare calculator. For example, a
ZED ticket from Baton Rouge (BTR) to Belize (BZE) on Continental requires a
connection in Houston (IAH). The ticket would need to be issued BTR-IAH-BZE,
using the specific zone fare for each flight segment on the routing. The
mileage between Baton Rouge and Houston is 253 or Zone 1 or $25 and the mileage
between Houston and Belize is 965 or Zone 3 or $36. So the base fare without
taxes would be $61 one way or $122 round trip.
Q12. Are paper ZED
tickets refundable?
A12. Similar to industry
discount tickets, paper ZED tickets are refundable within one year of purchase
date. Paper ZED tickets can only be refunded by submitting the unused portion
of your tickets to a Delta ticket counter or send to Delta Passenger Refunds
Department at the following address:
Delta Air Lines, Inc.
Passenger Refunds
Dept 518
700 South Central Avenue
Hapeville, GA 30354

5. Make copies of all documentation sent in..
Q13. Where do I go to
purchase a paper ZED ticket?
A13. All employees and
retirees purchase employee travel reduced-rate tickets such as paper ZED
tickets and ID75/90/95 tickets at a Delta ticket counter or city ticket office.
Q14. What if I am in a
city that does not have a Delta ticket counter or city ticket office, can I go
to another carrier's counter and purchase ZED tickets?
A14. No. The industry
standard is for each carrier to issue their own employees' paper ZED tickets.
Delta employees must continue to purchase paper ZED and ID75/90/95 tickets at a
Delta ticket counter or city ticket offiice.
Q15. I am a Delta
employee and I have a domestic partner. Is my domestic partner eligible for ZED
fares and tickets?
A15. As Delta's interline
agreements are renegotiated, it is Delta's intent to include domestic partner
eligibility in the new ZED agreements. Domestic partner eligibility varies from
carrier to carrier. Delta employees should check the Other Airline Index for
specific details of the employee travel agreement in effect at the time of
travel.
Q16. Are nondependent
children eligible for ZED tickets?
A16. No, nondependent
children are not eligible for interline reduced-rate tickets, including ZED
tickets. Delta is the only airline to offer children of employees age 21 or
older a travel privilege. Other airlines expect employees to use buddy passes
for their nondependent children which are generally a higher fare and lower
boarding priority. Since other carriers don't allow nondependent children to
continue to qualify as pass riders on their own airline except as buddy pass
riders, they would not agree to allow nondependent children of Delta employees
to travel on their airline on a ZED fare which is probably lower than a buddy
pass fare.
Q17. As a ZED passenger,
will I be charged for checked baggage?
A17. All ZED agreements
(paper ZED and eZED) include a free checked baggage allowance. The free checked
baggage allowance for ZED passengers varies by carrier, but will not be less
than one piece on routes which use the piece system or 20 kg (44 lb) on all
other routes. Checked baggage in excess of the free allowance is subject to the
transporting carrier's prevailing revenue passenger baggage rates.
Q17. Which carriers are
participating in the Electronic (eZED) program?
A17. Check out the Other
Airline Index for the most current list of eZED program participants.
Q18. How do I flight list
and issue an eZED ticket for travel on participating carriers?
A18. Here are the steps:
1. Log in to TravelNet
from any computer with Internet access (excluding mobile devices).
2. Select "Leisure Travel" then select "Interline Travel" from the drop-down menu
3. Select the myIDTravel link from this page. This will redirect you to the yIDTravel system where all pricing and ticketing will occur within the other airline's reservation system. You can request an e-mail confirmation when the transaction is complete.
4. A flight listing is automatically created when the eZED ticket is issued.

4. A flight listing is automatically created when the eZED ticket is issued.
Q19. How does this change
impact employees who use ZED tickets on eZED participating carriers?
A19. Employees can
purchase electronic ZED tickets for travel on eZED participating carriers. They
must log in to TravelNet to access the myIDTravel system to purchase, reissue
or refund eZED tickets.
Q20. Can a Delta agent
handle ticketing transactions for the eZED participating carriers after the
first week of theeZED implementation?
A20. No, employees must
log in to TravelNet to access the myIDTravel system for ticketing for travel on
the participating carriers.
Q21. Do eZED participating
carriers still accept previously issued paper ZED tickets?
A21. Yes. The four eZED
participating carriers will continue to accept previously issued paper ZED
tickets within the 90-day ticket validity period.
Q22. Does myIDTravel
charge Delta employees a service fee for eZED tickets?
A22. Yes, myIDTravel
collects a service charge of USD 1.47 (EUR 1.05) for each coupon/segment.
Q23. What is the validity
period of eZED tickets and can I get a refund if I don't use an eZED ticket?
A23. Consistent with all
of Delta's interline reduced-rate agreements, eZED tickets are valid for 90
days from the date of issue. Unused eZED tickets can be submitted for a refund
on the myIDTravel website up to 365 days from the original date of issue. The
myIDTravel service charges will be refunded for wholly unused eZED tickets, so
we recommend that you purchase eZED tickets on a one-way basis.
Q24. Once I have
purchased an eZED ticket, will all other eZED participating carriers accept the
electronic ticket?
A24. No. The myIDTravel
program books eZED tickets directly in the operating airline's reservation
system and may only be used for travel on that airline.
Q25. How do I check
flight availability when I purchase an eZED ticket?
A25. The myIDTravel
Flight Schedule Display screen includes a "Chance" column with either
a green (good), yellow (fair) or red (poor) smiley face. However for detailed
flight availability, you should contact the operating carrier's reservations
department.
Q26. Can I travel using
my eZED ticket as soon as I purchase it?
A26. Most eZED tickets
are issued in "real-time," but a few carriers process eZED tickets
through their reservations department. Find the airline listing on the Other
Airline Index and click on "See More" to determine if you need to allow
up to 24 hours before travel.
Q27. Are the booking and
ticketing procedures changing for the carriers not included in the eZED
program?
A27. No, follow all
existing ZED policies and procedures and paper ticket issuance for carriers
other than the four eZED participating carriers. However, we expect the number
of eZED participating carriers to increase in the future, so check out the
Other Airline Index for the most current list of eZED program participants.
Q28. Why is Delta making
the change to eZED ticketing?
A28. Besides the added
flexibility and convenience the eZED ticketing program will offer to Delta
employees, an industry mandate to eliminate all paper ticketing for interline
nonrevenue space-available travel will occur in March 2012. If airlines are
unable to comply, they may be dropped from other airlines' interline
reduced-rate agreements. Delta determined that the myIDTravel ticketing system
was the most efficient and cost-effective tool to help us comply with this
mandate.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Full post disclaimer in left column. PCN Home Page is located at: http://pcn.homestead.com/home01.html
