Memorial to a Fallen Hero at the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International
Airport
Ms Logue,
Thank you for taking my call today. It was a pleasure
talking to you in our brief conversation. In 1991, The Atlanta Vietnam Veterans
Business Association placed a Memorial to Warrant Officer Francis McDowell Jr
in Concourse A at our Airport. The Memorial hangs overhead near the up
escalator from the trains. WO McDowell was a Cobra Helicopter Pilot who was
killed in action in August, 1969 during the Vietnam War.
At the time the Memorial was placed in Concourse A, WO
McDowell's father was Chief Pilot for Delta Airlines. He, Delta Airlines and
the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association played important roles in
making sure that the Ceremony at our Airport was respectful and a success.
On November 8th, 2012,
the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association will be rededicating our
Memorial to WO McDowell in its new home in the Atrium area of our Airport. I
have been working for months with Airport Management for approval to relocate
our Memorial and for making the rededication a meaningful event. They, Airport
Management, have been the best in their support of this
relocation/rededication. Government, military and non military personnel have
been invited to participate in this event.
Most have accepted. WO McDowell's parents are deceased, but
his four sisters will be attending the rededication of our Memorial at our
Airport The Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association Members are
all"confirmed" Vietnam Veterans. We are 350 Members strong. We
volunteer our time twice a month at the USO at our Airport, greeting and
feeding our current Servicemen. We have Memorialized 25 Vietnam Servicemen from
Georgia that have lost their lives during the Vietnam War. Memorials have been
placed throughout Atlanta and Suburban Atlanta (CNN Center, Marietta Square,
Jonesboro Courthouse, Colony Square, Conyers, Decatur, etc). Also... We have
other activities throughout the year supporting our current military.
Our website is www.avvba.org, where you can find pictures and
locations of all of our Memorials. I have reserved the Conference Room on the
third floor in the Atrium in our Airport for pre-rededication gathering and for
a gathering after the rededication Ceremony. I have contracted with a caterer
that will serve coffee, juices and other beverages, pastries, fruit, etc,
beginning at 9AM. The Ceremony in the Atrium will begin at 10AM and end at
12PM. After the Ceremony, the caterer will be providing lunch in the same
Conference Room. All that attend are invited to the Conference Room. I would
not be surprised if you currently have pilots from the Vietnam War Era still
flying for Delta Airlines. I would like to reach out to them in some way to let
them know about the aforementioned. A few of our Members are retired Delta
Pilots. They will be reaching out to their Vietnam Veterans Pilot friends.
We would like Delta Airlines to, in some way, participate in
our upcoming Ceremony. Please let me know how you/Delta Airlines can make our
Ceremony a meaningful event. I am looking forward to hearing back from you.
Regards,
Lou Battaglia
