As it turns out, the "added benefit" for most vets HAS been added automatically.

Editor: the recent blurb on the DD Form 214, (while it may be worth a double check on the government’s accuracy), for most vets the added benefit IS automatic and has been included, according to what my friend Barry Boustead found out and also S’y, who writes below:

George,

Thanks for the information. I went to the Soc. Sec. Office today to check it out. The lady behind the counter advised me that the extra benefit is only for those who have not accumulated enough points to receive the maximum benefit. Therefore, most people in our situation are probably receiving the maximum benefit already and are not in a position to receive the additional amounts mentioned in the S/S letter. Please let me know if I am wrong. Thanks, George. S'y Horst

Mark, It certainly is worth a double check. I called the SS office and was
very unhappy with the quickness of their response without any fact
checking. In fact their response was less than cooperative and helpful. I will
write the address in the email, include a copy of my DD 214 and ask for an
audit.
