Editor: For the last couple of issues
there has been a point counter-point between Denis Walsh and Ev Gost. Now sometimes these kinds of things degrade
and move off issue into the personal arena.
What you are seeing is two highly professional gentlemen with great
integrity, bringing their perspectives to the marketplace and allowing our
readership to learn something. These
kinds of debates are the best and can be very helpful. Here is the rebuttal from Denis of Ev’s last
contribution.

Mark,
Ev Gost, and fellow retired Delta pilots:
Thanks
for these open notes where we all can learn and express our opinions. While I
agree that there is some relief knowing that Delta no longer has an out from
replacing D & S funds in years their cash flow is low, they already drained
the fund as much as possible every year since bankruptcy by $60 million for
active pilot vacation and sick leave. The result is that the Fund has
precipitously dropped as of June 30, 2011 to only cover approximately 61.4% of
the Plan Benefit Obligations. Northwest pilots did not have a D & S Fund
and as such did not have access to ours except when the bankruptcy court agreed
that Delta could simply reimburse the Fund if such a new benefit for former
Northwest pilots was offered – a revenue neutral arrangement for the Fund.
I
am truly sorry to hear that Jim Haigh (or any retired pilot) lost the
difference in his earned disability benefit when he retired at the lower
bankruptcy adjusted retired benefit. I have some former Western pilot friends
who did not suffer such a fate. I also begrudgingly recognize that ALPA and
Delta may find ways to further amend/erode the D & S Fund. It is good there
are others who can plead our case without choking on their own bile. Thanks to
Ev Gost, Jim Haigh, and others who volunteer their time on our behalf.
