Did
you miss it?
First time (I can remember) in over the 3 years of running
the PCN that there has been a 2 week gap before publishing the next issue of
the High Life. I have to say, I try hard
to get one out every week. There are
times when I am simply preoccupied with other duties and when there isn’t
enough content which is ready to publish.
For that reason I call the HL a periodical and not a weekly. Oh well, hope you missed it.

Deltoids
on the Road:
You know every pilot retiree is not
sitting on the dock with a line in the water.
Some are out there “hard” at it. Here
in London heading to the Executive Lounge for some freebies, who do I run in
to? A couple of Deltoids that you may
recognize; Bob Wilkerson and Tom Jolma
(PDX-JFK). And what were they
doing? At the moment they were doing
what every pilot is well schooled on, collecting freebies from the hotel
executive club. Why were they in London
along with a couple of retired American pilots?
They now work for Boeing and are Boeing’s “have bags will travel”
instructors. So I asked if they would be
able to take in some of the Olympics while here in London. Unfortunately, their gig will end before then
so no, Bob will be off to Dubai and Tom I didn’t here. So you never know who you’re gonna run into
while on the road. It is a safe bet if they
are handing out freebies and your near an airport, some of those guys in layover
clothes, could be a former deltoid.
Cozy up and listen for a little delta-speak and say, “hey, don’t I know you?”
By the way, on my next trip to
London we had a 48 so we took a day downtown and reviewed a lot of the hub bub
for the upcoming Olympics. Now that they
are on and we are enjoying the competition, here is an image that you will see
over and over again in the next couple of weeks, that I took a week prior to
the start.

Subscription
Issues:
Of our over 2600 active google group
members who receive our notices and the High Life, there were 39 “open” group
invitations. I recently sent out a check
up email to these to see if they were getting the notices ok. So now here is a check up for the membership
at large: If you are having any issues
getting notices or controlling the ones you do get, please email me and we can
work together to straighten it out.

PCN
SignUp Process-
Well, I have gotten from time to time a
comment on the process that we use here at the PCN to establish a subscribing
member. Why do I have a 2 step
process? Here is the down and dirty. I knew the group would be a fairly large one
and I wanted to:
- Protect the
group’s list from spammers and undesirables.
- Wanted to
assure the list was current and kept current.
- And wanted
to know a little something about the person behind the email address
In addition to the above goals, we use
almost free services for the group. Since I use Google Group to distribute emails
and Blogspot to host the High Life and Flown West sites, there has to be a
method to keep track of things.
Therefore, I keep a private - protected
(non-sharable) data base of names behind the email addresses. Secondly, I am forced by the Google Group to
“invite” applying members to join. So
because of our goals and the two points above, I maintain a two step process to
sign up. So far it has accomplished
exactly what I had hoped for, a current
“active” subscribing list, and a group protected from spammers and
scammers.

Policy
Flexibility:
The PCN publishes any member contributor
name and email in our semi-private newsletter and archive. The theory was passed down to me from David
Roberts as he said it allows for members to contact one another directly. So that is what we do.
However, there are posts that you may
like to share but refrain from having your name and contact info listed. If so, then state “please post but scrub my contact info” or something similar in the
subject line, and I will.
